Johnson, Publisher, Tyler, Texas Chapter XLIX - Pages 217 - 218 James W. Arnold was a native of Taladago county, Alabama; born in 1839 came to Smith county, Texas in 1858, locating in Tyler. He was a good mechanic and a man of good intelligence and soon became a popular contractor in his line of business. When the war came on, he rushed to the front and volunteered in Co. K, 3rd Texas Cavalry, and saw much hard service. His regiment was part of the famous Ross' Texas brigade, making an excellent reputation in the Army of Tennessee. After the war, he returned to Tyler and remained here until 1866, when he removed to Shreveport, La., where he died in June, 1900. Jas. W. Arnold married the widow of Gus Howard in 1866, who had one child - Miss Jessie Augusta Howard, who married Robt. Clark, now both residents of Tyler. Robert Clark is a prominent business man of this city and has a very intelligent family. By this marriage were born three girls and one boy, Annie Carlisle, Nettie - who died at the age of eighteen months - Hettie and Robert Logan. Annie Carlisle married Chas. Summerkamp, and are residents of this city. Hettie married J. C. Morgan, also a citizen of Tyler. Robert Logan resides with the family at Shreveport. Messrs. Chas. Summerkamp and J. C. Morgan are good business men and are up-to-date in their respective lines of business. They are good people and the family of each stand along the front seats for intelligence and excellent social qualities. Jas. W. Arnold was a man of warm impulses and always a reliable friend, intelligent and upright in his dealing with mankind.
