Johnson, Publisher, Tyler, Texas Chapter XXXIII. - Pages 163-165 Bryan Marsh, Sr., was a native of North Carolina and moved to Alabama at an early day. He was a large planter, a man of intelligence and a thorough-going, good citizen. He was the father of seven children-- Martha, Darius, Bryan, Jr., Edmund, Isabella, Sallie and Peter. Martha married Frank Bell, and [sic] who was in the early fifties a prominent business man of Tyler. He died in Tyler in 1854. By this marriage they had two children, Bryan and Frank M. Bell, who are now prominent men in business circles of this city. Her second marriage was with Col. Tignal W. Jones, a prominent lawyer and citizen. They had one child, Mary, who married Samuel H. Cox, a successful business man of Tyler. Mr. Cox is now the president of the Citizens' National Bank of this city. They have five children. Darius Marsh was a citizen of Austin, Texas, and a young lawyer of great promise. At the commencement of the civil war he enlisted in the army; made a Lieutenant, and saw much active service with the Western Confederate Army. He was killed in front of Atlanta, GA., acting the gallant part of a Southern soldier. Bryan Marsh, Jr., married Miss Mittie Shuart, a pretty and accomplished young woman, the daughter of Col. Henry Shuart, a prominent farmer and citizen of Smith county. By this marriage they had one child -- Henry B. Marsh, now one of the leading lawyers of Tyler; prominent man in professional and business life, and the senior member of the law firm of Marsh, McIlwaine & Fitzgerald. Henry Marsh married Miss Sarah Portis, an accomplished young lady of Alabama. They have three children. Col. Bryan Marsh's second marriage was with Miss Lucy Portis, a bright-minded, attractive woman, and the daughter of Col. E. M. Portis, who was a large planter and leading man of the State of Alabama. They had two children --Mittie and Mary. Miss Mittie is single and lives with the family in this city. She possesses the charms that make her very, very popular with all her acquaintances. Miss Mary married I. H. Crutcher & Son, of this city. They have one child. Isabella married Capt. David Y. Gaines, both died since the civil war. They raised three children and each is doing well in life. David Y. Gaines, Jr., is a young lawyer of this city and one of the present Justices of the Peace of the Tyler precinct. Sallie married T. M. Love. They both died in this county some years ago. They had six children--Fannie, Edward, Tignal, Rebecca, Marsh and Bell. Fannie married Allen Clemons--they have five children. Edward resides in Tyler. He is a popular and intelligent young man. He is single. Tignal is dead. Rebecca married Hugo Roberts, of Tyler. They have two children. Marsh is single and is a resident of Alabama. Miss Belle is single and is one of Tyler's most attractive and intelligent young ladies. Peter married Miss Addie McClure, the daughter of Col. McClure, a prominent farmer of Smith county. They have several children, and resides [sic] at Rhea, in Navarro county. He is a leading farmer. Col. Bryan Marsh, Sr., removed to Smith county, in 1854, and settled in or near Mt. Carmel and opened up a large plantation. He only lived a short time after he became a citizen of Smith county. He was a great loss to the community in which he lived.
