L. Lowery was born in Guinett County, GA., thirty-one miles north of Atlanta, June 15th, 1823. He was a son of David and Ann Lowery. David Lowery was a son of Charles and Sarah Lowery, who was a native of South Carolina. Charles Lowery served in the war of 1812, under Andrew Jackson. He was married to Ann Bennett, March 13th, 1817; moved to the Cherokee Purchase in North Georgia in February 1831 - five years before the Indians were moved-and there raised a family of children. When F. L. Lowery left Cass county, now Barto county, he was the oldest resident of that county, as his father and brothers moved from there before he did. F. L. Lowery married Miss Sarah Lowery, June 30th, 1846, a daughter of James and Catherine Lowery, of Cherokee County, Ga. They had six children--Anna Catherine, James David, William C., Ellen A., Samuel W., Sarah E.; all died while young, except Anna, James and Sarah. Anna C. married Dr. C. McGuffie and raised five children. Dr. McGuffie died several years ago. Mrs. McGuffie died at Athens. They are both buried at Starrville, Texas. James D. Lowery married Miss Paradine Duke; they had two children. He resides in Waco. Mrs. Duke is dead. Sarah E. married H. C. Wood, a prominent farmer of this county. They have three children--one girl and two boys. F. L. Lowery removed from Georgia to Alabama, remaining there for one year, and thence back to Atlanta and lived there nearly two years; left there and removed to Center, Alabama, and followed the business of a merchant with success for four years, then removed to Texas in 1858, locating at Starrville, in Smith County, in 1858. He was a prominent citizen and merchant. During the war he ran a grist mill for the government. When the Civil War closed, he opened up business, doing a general mercantile trade until 1880, when he removed to Tyler and has been a citizen of our city from that date. Mrs. Lowery died April 20th, 1896, and thus passed away a good, Christian woman. She was buried in Tyler cemetery. He went back to Georgia and on the 17th of June, 1897, he married Miss Elizabeth Lowery, the daughter of Daniel and Nancy Lowery, who reside in that state. He still lives in Tyler and keeps a boarding house. His present wife is quite an accomplished woman--full of business and energy, possessing rare traits of womanhood. F. L. Lowery has long been a citizen of Smith county, holding a good business record as an upright Christian gentleman. He is a member of the Methodist church and has always been a constant worker for the cause of Christianity. His children and grand children occupy good positions in life, in business and society. He is one man who always looked on the best side of humanity, passing a life in Smith county full of the duties and tender affections that makes life more beautiful and tolerable. He has always enjoyed the confidence of this people as his life has been one of gentleness, forbearance, yet with candor he met things as they came. He has set an exemplary life for his descendants to follow.
