PATTERSON AND FAMILY "Some Biographies of Old Settlers." Historical, Personal and Reminiscent. Volume I By Sid S. Johnson, 1900: Sid S. Johnson, Publisher, Tyler, Texas Chapter LXXI - Pages 296-297 John M. Patterson was another citizen of Smith County, who spent a busy and useful life as a pioneer in the early history of Tyler and Smith County, up to his death, which occurred a few years ago. John M. Patterson was born in South Carolina, November the 14th, 1817; moved to Alabama; and thence to Texas, settled in Tyler, in Februrary, 1848. He was a leading business man, and through energy and good judgment, his life was a success. He had a kindly feeling for his neighbors, who in return commended him for his good traits of character. His wife, a most intelligent and Christian woman, has joined him in "the shade of the tree," beyond the dividing line. John M. Patterson was loved and appreciated for his worth and true manhood. His courtesy and gentlemanly deportment, together with his sterling worth as a business man, naturally, put him to the front as a leader. He always had more or less farming interest, and he mastered the details, counted the cost, pushing the work with good results. Mrs. and Mrs. Patterson raised quite a large family of children. I call to mind some of this family. Julius Saunders, a step-son of John M. Patterson, is a well known business man of Tyler, an old merchant and all-round man in the affairs of life. Julius made a good record as a private and a Lieutenant in Douglas' Texas battery, in the Confederate army. Mrs. Thos. J. Ingram, who lives south of Tyler. Her husband, Thos. J. Ingram, is a leading farmer, and a thorough-going citizen. Thomas Patterson died several years ago. He was a number one business man, and a man of the best impulses. Fred Patterson was a merchant; tax collector of Smith County, and farmer. He died several years ago. He was a very popular man. Pink Patterson resides in this city; he is a leading business man; has a very intelligent family. The Pattersons are good people and worthy representative of the Old South Carolina stock.
