Johnson, Publisher, Tyler, Texas Chapter XLVII - Pages 212 - 214 Jno. P. Smith was born in Andersonville, S.C., September 23rd, 1838. The family moved to Cobb county, Ga., when he was four years old. Came to Texas in 1858, and settled on a farm near what is now Swan. Engaged in the mercantile business at Quitman, Texas, part of the year 1861. Volunteered February 1862, went out in Capt. W. J. Smith's company, 14th Texas infantry, Clark, Colonel. Served through the war. After the war engaged in farming. In January, 1867, was married to Miss Sallie Wiggins, daughter of Col. John M. Wiggins. Farmed near Winona until 1888, when he moved to Tyler. In 1890, was elected Justice of the Peace and elected Sheriff in 1892, serving six years. There were six children in the family, three boys and three girls, one of the girls dying in infancy. His wife was born 22nd of November, 1847, Lauderdale county, Miss. In 1852, the family moved to Texas and settled near what is now Winona, at old Mt.Carmel. She lived here until married in 1867. Wig Smith, the oldest son, was born near Hopewell, Oct. 5th, 1867. He spent his life on the farm until he was twenty years old. He moved to Tyler with the family. He worked for the Texas Express Company, and for several years was a clerk for Palmer & Storr. In 1892, he was made a deputy sheriff and served for six years. He is now on the Tyler police force. On Dec. 17, 1895, he was married to Miss Lottie Shelton, of Monticello, Arkansas. They have two children. Chas. H. Smith was born near Winona in 1870, and lived there until 18 years old, when he came to Tyler with his parents. Spent two years in High School here and at Omen. Has been engaged in teaching for the past nine years, with the exception of one year, which was spent in attending the normal at Huntsville. Taught part of the time at Hubbard and Corsicana. Douglas Smith, the third child, was also born near Winona in the year 1872; moved with his parents to Tyler 1888. For awhile he went to school, but most of the time has worked at various employments. He has for several years been employed by the Pacific Express Co. Lottie and Nellie, twins, were born near Winona. They are very accomplished and sweet young ladies and very popular with all their acquaintances and friends.
