Historical, Personal and Reminiscent. Volume I By Sid S. Johnson, 1900: Sid S. Johnson, Publisher, Tyler, Texas Chapter XLVI - Pages 209 - 211 Phillip Horton was born January 26th, 1829, on Leatherwood Creen, Lawrence county, Indiana. He came to Texas in 1849, and settled near Omen, (formerly Canton), in the neighborhood of Andrew Mason, who had removed to Texas two years previous from the same state. He married Miss Nancy Mason, a charming daughter of Mr. Mason, in this county, on the 17th day of October, 1850. By this marriage twelve children were born --- John Franklin, Malisa Ann, Andrew Jackson, Jefferson Fowler, George Washington, Phillip Wesley, Lewis Patton, Robert Dale, Charles Lee, Cora Ellen, William Troy and Nancy Alice. Three of this number are dead, two boys and one girl. Phillip Horton enlisted in Capt. R. B. Long's company, Roberts' Texas regiment, being the 11th Infantry. He was a fine mechanic and after serving for some time he was transferred to the government shops at Arkadelphia, Ark., and thence to Tyler, where he made himself useful to the cause of the South, keeping his post until the surrender, then returned home to reconstruct the delapidated condition of his home. He was true to the duties of his manhood and citizenship. He is an intelligent man and has passed a long life as one of the early settlers, and has seen this country grow from a wilderness to its present happy advancement. Full of zeal and energy, he has been a helper in his community's growth. He was a Mason of many years standing and a very bright one at that. Most of his life has been devoted to farming and the construction of mills and gins. Phillip Horton has many descendants, and I can only mention the families of his own children, as follows: John Franklin married Miss Eliza Riddle and resides in Henderson county, Texas. Malisa Ann died while an infant. Andrew Jackson married Miss V.T. Boon and resides in this city. Jefferson Fowler died when about five years old. Geo. Washington married Miss Eliza Ragsdale and are residents of Tyler. Phillip Wesley married Miss Nettie Burrough and lives near Arp, Texas. Lewis Patton married Miss Bulah Arnold, and lives near Troupe, Texas. Robert Dale married Miss Dora McDonald and residesat Elmo, Kaufman county, Texas. Charles Lee is single and a member of the firm of Horton & Son, Omen, Texas. Cora Ellen married Copeland Campbell and reside near Whitehouse, Texas. Wm. Troy died at the age of twenty-one. Nancy Ellen is single and resides with her parents at Omen, Texas. The Horton family were among the early people here and stand well wherever they are known. Phillip Horton is an intelligent man, well read up in the present and past events that makes him a very pleasant associate. His descendants are many, and if the world was filled with just such people as they are, no trouble would likely arise in it. Their motto is: Stick to your business and let other people's alone. Not resentful, but can take care of themselves. Elder Horton here mentioned is in appearance and looks a typical pioneer of the early settler in Smith county.
