Johnson, pg. 149 Sam Birdwell, of Chandler, a member of Ector's brigade, went through the war like a hero. He followed the fortunes of that famous command to the end of 1865, then returned home and has been as good a citizen as he was a Confederate soldier. At the battle of Altoona he recieved a serious wound and came out with twenty-six bullet holes in his clothes, plainly showing the very close quarters he had been in during that desperate engagement, led by Gen. Sears. In civil life as a citizen of Henderson county Sam Birdwell has preformed faithfully and well every duty, and his influence has always been exerted for good.
