Johnson James Cleland passed away to the "great beyond" about the middle of July at the residence of his son, George Cleland, at Black Bayou, Texas, after an illness of nine weeks. A native of St. Augustine, Fla., he went to Texas fifty-five years ago. On the outbreak of the war he enlisted in Company D, of Griffith's battalion, which did such valiant service in assisting the ships to run the blockade around Sabine Pass. Shortly after peace was declared he went to Orange, where he spent most of the intervening time as a house painter. Many a story did he tell of the stirring times which left the land desolate. He was a great favorite of the young people. He is survived by two sons, George Cleland, of Black Bayou, and John Cleland, of Aapalachicola, Fla.
