Johnson pg 85 A. M. SHANNON Alexander M. Shannon and honored citizen of Galveston, Texas, died in that city the 20th of October 1906. He was born in Arkansas May 7th, 1939. but went to Texas the age of 14 with the family, settling in west Texas on a fine ranch along the San Antonio river. In 1861 he cast his lot with his native tate and joined the famous Texas Rangers (the 8th Cavalry). He was 1st Lieut. of Co. Co. and afterwards its captain. He was detached and assigned to command of the secret srvice of the army of Tennessee, reporting to the commanding general: and in Feb. 1865 while in this service, he was promoted to colonel. He was with Johnston's army in North Carolina when news of General Lee's surrender was received, and ws then selected as commander of the escort detailed to accompany President Davis and aid him in getting to the west side of the Mississippi river; but the Confedrate Chieftan was captured before Col. Shannon and his men reached him. He was wounded several times during the war. He was a prominent business man of Texas.
