Johnson, p. 163 Alfred F. Smith was born in Franklin county, Ga., in August 1838. He moved with his parents to Pickens county, Alabama, and at the outbreak of the war between the states enlisted in Co. I, Twenty-third Georgia regiment. During the greater part of his servie he was orderly sergeant of his company. Much of his service was in Virginia, where he participated in many battles, always doing what is required of a soldier. He was made a prisoner at Chancellorsville and confined in Fort Delaware until his exchange. He was wounded in the thigh during one of the last battles of the war. Mr. Smith was married to Miss Harriet Freeman in 1860. He removed to Texas in 1873 and two years later settled in Kerr county, where he died September 21, 1906. His wife and eight children survive him. He was a leading member of the Baptist church and was ready at the final call.
