Barron, for the sum of $5.00 paid by G. W. Campbell, S. H. Smyrl and Y. R. Barron, Trustees, sold a portion of the Benjamin Fry Headright to them. This land situated in Smith County, Texas and described by metes and bounds contained two acres and Mr. Barron signed the deed on July 24, 1893 and it was filed in the Smith County Courthouse. This land, located six miles south of Tyler was to be used as a cemetery. The Barron Cemetery has also been referred to as the Shackleford Cemetery. W. T. Barron born Jan 25, 1826 was buried in the Barron Cemetery February 11, 1901, along side his grave is M. L. Barron 2/12/1829-9/22/1902; Estelle B. Barron 3/27/1952 - /1/1897 and "X" Barron 5/10/1878-2/15/1918. Some of the grave markers date back to the 1860's, bearing such names as Barron, Beddingfield, Burns, Carter, Henderson and Smyrl. According to an article in the Tyler Morning Telegraph, Tuesday, July 29, 1969, the Barron Cemetery Foundation was organized in 1893. The old records of this cemetery have not survived with time, however, in 1969, Frank Smyrl, along with 19 descendants and friends of the original founders, took on the task of reorganizing and forming the "Barron Cemetery Foundation" which still exists today. This Foundation maintained the Cemetery under the direction of five trustees, W. R. Smyrl, President; J. Melvin Barron, Vice President; Frank H. Smyrl, Secretary-Treasurer; Chester L. Beddingfield, Trustee and Hubert Dark, Trustee. The first (organizational) meeting was held at Fullers Restaurant and the next meeting was held at the Cemetery. The Beddingfield family offered to donate material to complete the fencing around the Cemetery and the Foundation accepted their offer. At one of the first meetings it was reported that grave markers were available at $5.00 each and orders were received for Woods, Thomas and Ward graves. At the next meeting members gathered, working to clean the cemetery and bringing lunch. The business meeting followed lunch. Later in 1973, meetings were held at the Flint-Gresham Community Center, and still later at the home of Mrs. Golden (Ethel) Beddingfield and now at the home of Mrs. Elbert (Norma) Beddingfield. The Barron Cemetery Foundation is a non-profit organization and due to the lack of participation is requesting the City of Tyler to assume maintenance of it. It is anticipated that all funds now on hand will be turned over to the city of Tyler. Prepared by Norma Beddingfield from newspaper clippings and old minutes. December, 2000 - LUDIEB@aol.com
