Box 6967 Tyler, Texas 75711 --------------------------------------------------------------------- This book is dedicated to Mrs. James T. (Lorene WEST) CONAWAY of the East Texas Genealogical Society Lorene is a native of East Texas, having been born in Smith County. Evidently this gives her an inordinate interest in the genealogy of this area. Since she has been a member of the East Texas Genealogical Society, she has been one of the strongest pillars of that organization. Although she has never held an office, other than director, she has been Chairperson of many committees and is always ready to work on whatever needs to be done. When the Cemetery recording project was started, Lorene became one of the foremost workers. She has worked in cold weather and hot; in wet weather and dry. This Society is most fortunate to have such a determined worker. For her great help and dedication in keeping the East Texas Genealogical Society going and especially for all her work in recording cemetery records of Smith County, we fondly dedicate this book to this fine lady. ---------------------------------------------------------- CEMETERIES - NUMERICAL LISTING No. Cemetery Name Map Location Page 1 Mt. C-4 102 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PREFACE This is the second of a series of publications projected by The East Texas Genealogical Society to transcribe and publish all the cemetery inscriptions in Smith County, Texas. Volume I, published in 1981, covered Oakwood and Rose Hill Cemeteries in the City of Tyler. This Volume II covers cemeteries in the Northwest Quarter of the county defined as being bounded on the east by State Highway No. 14, running from Tyler to the county line on the north, and bounded on the south by State Highway No. 64, running from Tyler to the county line on the west. This includes additional cemeteries within the Tyler city limits. Work on the Northwest Quarter was initiated under the chairmanship of Gene Davenport, who was followed by Sally Garner as chairman. The publication was finally completed under the chairmanship of Sarah Beene. Many persons contributed timee and effort to complete this volume, and we have listed in the acknowledgments all those who are shown by our records to have worked on this book. If anyone has been omitted we extend our apologies. Some of the cemeteries in the Northwest Quarter are in extremely poor condition, being overgrown with grass and weeds and with broken stones or obliterated inscriptions. In some of the cemeteries there are obviously many unmarked graves with only a small percentage having legible inscriptions. Because of this, the fact that this book does not list an inscription for a person does not necessarily mean that he or she is not buried in a particular cemetery. We have made every effort to reproduce the inscriptions accurately, however, we know that perfection is not possible, and we will welcome any corrections or additions that a reader may call to our attention. ------------------------------------------------------------------- We wish to express our appreciation to the following individuals, without whose efforts this book would not have been accomplished.
