A native of New Orleans, Louisiana Sarah spent most of her childhood years in various Texas cities, including Houston in her teen years. She attended Stephen F. Austin University and the University of Houston, where she received a B.S. degree in Education in 1966. Currently, she is working toward a Master's degree in Special Education, and is beginning her third year as a teacher at Orr Elementary School. Sarah and her family are members of the Green Acres Baptist Church, where she is also a Sunday School teacher. Prior to moving to Tyler, she served her church in Houston as youth choir director. A dedicated genealogist, Sarah joined the East Texas Genealogical Society shortly after her arrival in our city, and has served in numerous capacities, including president in 1984. In addition, she serves as East Texas Area Representative for the Texas State Genealogical Society and is serving on the editoral board of that organization. Other memberships include the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of American Colonists, National Genealogical Society, and several genealogical and family associations. She is a former editor of "The Beanstalk," quarterly publication of the Bean/Beene Association. Married to John Lloyd Beene, a chemist for the Texas Department of Public Safety, the couple has three daughters, Meredith, Melissa, and Elizabeth. These cemeteries were listed as Black in the book but African-American on the internet. --------------------------------------------------------------------- PREFACE This is the fifth and final volume in a series of publications projected by The East Texas Genealogical Society to transcribe and publish all the cemetery inscriptions in Smith County, Texas. VOLUME I, published in 1981, covers Oakwood and Rose Hill Cemeteries in the City of Tyler. VOLUME II, published in 1983, covers the North­west Quarter of the county defined as being bounded on the east by State Highway No. 14 running through Tyler to the county line on the north, and bounded on the south by State Highway No. 64 running through Tyler to the county line on the west. VOLUME III, published in 1984, covers the Southwest Quarter of the county defined as being bounded on the north by State Highway No. 64 running through Tyler to the county line on the west, and bounded on the east by State Highway No. 69 running through Tyler to the county line on the south. VOLUME IV, published in 1986, covers the Southeast Quarter of the county defined as bounded on the north by State Highway No. 31 running through Tyler to the county line on the east, and bounded on the west by State Highway No. 69 running through Tyler to the county line on the south. This VOLUME V covers the Northeast Quarter of the county defined as being bounded on the south by State Highway No. 31 running from Tyler to the county line on the east and bounded on the west by State Highway No. 14 running from Tyler to the county line on the north. These five volumes include 207 burial sites ranging from single graves to large urban cemeteries. We have made every effort to locate and reproduce the inscriptions accurately, and we welcome any corrections or additions that a reader may call to our attention.
