OVERTON TO JOHN F. OVERTON IN TEXAS Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee February 26, 1869 Dear Brother, I have but little to inform you of interest more than to let you know that I and family are well and hoping these few lines may find you and yours likewise. I enclose a check for $250. You will please send me a receipt as administrator of John F. Overton Junior, deceased so that I can settle with the court and also one for the $400 I sent you. I had to administer on the estate before I could collect any of the money. I wrote to you on this subject in my last. I will inform you of that Brownlowe has ordered out the militia in a number of counties and proclaimed martial law in those counties. The consequences I shall not predict, yet I fear bad time. God's will be done is my wish. It is supposed by some that the great object to be affected by this militia share is to hold the state two more years - which he can affect by putting counties under martial law where the Democrats have a majority. Well, if his militia behaves themselves, we may not suffer so much, but if not, God only knows the result. We are all in great dread for the future welfare of our people or State. We are looking anxiously for Grant’s message. Yet I fear that he will go with his Radical Party and maybe worse, he may proclaim himself Dictator. I will send you a paper today so you can see what we are doing in this county. I have not seen Thomas Jameson for some time he promised to let me have some money for you in a few days, yet I fear he will come up missing. I received $45 in Tennessee money of Jacob. He sold mules of the Estate of Margaret Jameson for it and swore that he has not used it and has held it for the heirs. When $20 of it is worthless, and $25 that is worth 32 cents on the dollar or was when I received it, I thought it would get better as it has been improving lately. I would not take it at first, but the law forced me to do so and it cost me $2.50 to find out. You must write often and tell Samuel I will write to him soon. We have had a spell of very fine weather. Wheat looks well and I think our prospects for a good crop is better than last year. I will sow oats next week if the ground is suitable. I will plant some cotton and corn and I have fifty acres in wheat. I am in the schoolhouse and I tell you I think if I could see as well as I once could, I would be better teacher than I ever was. Your Brother, E.C. Overton To John F. Overton (Use "back button" to return to the Overton Letters Table of Contents.)
