Overton applied for a headright land grant (3rd class grant) in December 1839 in San Augustine County, Texas, as did Joseph L. and John L. McKay, but would not have received that for some time after the filing. Joseph's land grant wasn't patented until 27 January 1847 in Van Zandt County. John F. Overton was the assignee on most of his land grants -- meaning he bought them from the original grantee."
