All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm Submitted by Mary Love Berryman - marylove@tyler.net 25 May 2001 ***************************************************************** Tyler Daily-Courier-Times, Saturday, July 28, 1917 WHAT SOCIETY IS DOING By Mrs. Dolly Hanks Lake Party and Dance At the Lindsey Country home at Greenbrier, Mrs. John Hunter Pope gave a delightful lake party and dance on Thursday evening in honor of her house party, composed of the following guests: Mr. Stanley Kemp of Indiana, Miss Oden McCarthy, of Houston and Mr. Walter McKinney, of McKinney, Texas. * * * Tyler Girls Honored Miss Ruby Christian and Miss Pauline Palmer were the guests of Mrs. J. E. Callahan in Mt. Pleasant this week. Many social courtesies were extended to them during their visit. Mrs. Kathleen Denman entertained with a dance and a swimming party in their honor. A morning musicale was given Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Callahan * * * Swimming Party Mrs. John Hunter Pope entertained at an enjoyable affair Wednesday evening at Greenbrier, in honor of her house party. Boating and swimming were the featured diversions, which were punctuated at an appropriate hour with a delicious supper service. The honor guests were Mr. Walter McKinney, of McKinney, Texas, Miss Oden McCarthy, of Houston, and Mr. Stanley Kemp of Indiana. * * * For Mrs. Harry Harrington Mrs. W. B. Harrington entertained on Friday afternoon with a five hundred party, given in honor of her guest, Mrs. Harry Harrington of San Antonio. There were two tables of players, and the games were delightfully exciting and full of pleasure At the close of the games a delicious, refreshment service, consisting of pine apple sherbert and cake, was enjoyed by the following guests: Mmes. Lee Marsh, Sullenberger, Harry Harrington, Frank Taylor, Clay Hight, Jim Walker, Miss Emma Cain. * * * With the Misses Albertson M. Mayer, Miss Parker and Mr. and Mrs. Howard of Mineola, formed a motor party to Tyler Tuesday and spent the evening with the Misses Albertson. Delightful entertainment was found in social repartee, games and music, after which refreshments consisting of ice cream, cake and panocha (?) candy was served. Miss Albertson joined the party on their return home. * * * Society Personals Mrs. Baldwin left Thursday for a visit with friends in New York. Miss Pauline Palmer has returned from a visit with friends in Mt. Pleasant. Miss Louise Marsh has returned from a visit with relatives and friends in Athens. Mrs. Grover Hemphill of Tulsa, Okla. is the guest of her sister, Mrs. R. B. Still. Mrs. P. L. Downs and children of Temple are the guests of Mrs. and Mrs. Alex Woldert. Mrs. Chas. Pierpoint and two children, of Marshall, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Coker. Senator and Mrs. A. C. Robbins, of Athens, spent Sunday with their grandmother, Mrs. Benson Roberts. Mrs. Geo. R. Phillips and son, Mr. Geo. H. Philips, motored to Athens sunday to visit Mr. Ross T. Phillips and family. Mrs. Harry Harrington will leave this afternoon for her home in San Antonio, after visiting Mrs. W. R. Harrington. Miss Annie McKay Brown, of Portland, Oregon, will arrive tomorrow evening from a visit in Houston, and will be the guest of Miss Lucy Morris for several days. Mrs. Robert Spence and children will leave tomorrow for Denver and other points in Colorado to spend the remainder of the summer. Miss Elizabeth Philipps and Mr. Geo. H. Philips, are expected to return to day from a visit in Dallas, and will bring as their guest their cousin Miss Vivian Westmoreland. Misses Imogene and Evelyn Waters and Master Bayard Waters of Bluefields, Nicaraugua, are the guests of their aunt Mrs. Edward Frazier. Miss Evenlyn and Master Bayard will spend the winter here and attend school. Miss Imogene will remain here for several months before returning to Bluefields. Mrs. Grace Hewitt is visiting in Jacksonville. Mr. and Mrs. ?? Caldwell are spending a while in Galveston Mrs. T. B. Wofford, of Athens, is the guest of Mrs. W. H. Marsh. Mr. and Mrs. Evans Swann have returned from a visit in Galveston Mrs. T. K. Swann and Mrs. Cone Johnson will leave tomorrow for an extended visit in Deer Park, Maryland. Miss Mary Taylor and Mrs. Chas. Willis left Thursday for a visit in other states. Miss Taylor goes to New York, while Mrs. Willis will visit relatives and friends to West Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Will Schulle, of Austin, enroute home from a visit in Chicago, are stopping over for a few days' stay in Tyler, dividing the time with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Swann and Mr. and Mrs. Evans Swann.
