Nothing would afford me more pleasure than to yield to the solicitations and wishes of my friends in that respect, were I differently situated than I am at present. Having sold out where I now live, with the expectation of moving to some other place the coming fall or winter, I have invariably when interrogated upon the subject of becoming a candidate, told the people that I could not, or would not, be a candidate. I have not yet determined where I shall locate; I may probably settle again in Anderson county, but should I not do so, I assure my fellow citizens that it is not because I do not fell warmly attache to them. And let me go where I may, I shall never forget the many tokens of their kindness exhibited towards me since I have been living amongst them. And now that my friends desire to elevate me to a higher position, it is with great reluctance that I withhold my name from them. But being situated as I am at present, unsettled, and having said I would not be a candidate, I feel morally bound in justice to myself and family to withhold my name from the present canvass. Yours, respectfully, R. K. Gaston
