Col. Elisha E. Lott of the 22nd Texas Volunteer Infantry ________ At a meeting of the citizens of Smith county, Texas, at the Courthouse in the town of Tyler, January 20th, 1864, held for the purpose of paying a tribute of respect to the memory of the late Lt. Col. E. E. Lott; on motion of Capt. R. B. Long, Col. O. M. Roberts was called to preside as Chairman over said meeting, and on motion of Stanley M. Warner, Esq., J. M. McFarland was appointed Secretary. The object of the meeting being explained by the Chairman, the meeting was then eloquently addressed by Hon. B. T. Selman and S. M. Warner. Esq. The following preamble and resolutions were then presented by Hon. B. T. Selman, and unanimously adopted: Whereas---Lt. Col. Elisha E. Lott departed this life at his residence in Smith county, Texas, on the 17th day of January, 1864, of a disease contracted in the army of the Confederate States, having been in service nearly two years; and, Whereas---His long and faithful services in the councils of his State; his ardent devotion to the cause of the South, and his sacrifice of his life in the arduous duties and privations of the soldier, to maintain its independence from Northern tyranny, together with his uniform goodness of heart as a man, that has distinguished him in every sphere of public and private life, have excited the admiration and warm attachment of his countrymen --- Resolved---That we, his fellow-citizens, express our sincere regret at the loss of one who has ever been devoted to the public interest, and who has so nobly proved his patriotism by his works, influence and example. Resolved---That we, tender our condolence to his wife and children in their sad bereavement. Resolved---That the Secretary of this meeting furnish a copy of this preamble and resolutions to his family, and also a copy be furnished the “Tyler Reporter,” with a request to publish. At a special communication of Starr Lodge No. 118, held at Lodge room in the town of Starrville, Smith County, Texas, on the 19th day of January, A.D. 1864, H. J. McBride, Jas. H. McCorkle and Lewis A. Read, were appointed a Committee to draft suitable preamble and resolutions, expressive of the feeling of this Lodge. In regard to the death of Bro. Elisha E. Lott, a member of St. John’s Lodge No. 53, Tyler, Texas ; also Lt. Col. of the 22d Texas Vol. Infantry, who departed this life at his residence in Starrville, on the 17h day of January, 1864, at 10 o’clock P. M. The following preamble and resolutions were read and unanimously adopted : WHEREAS, It hath pleased Almighty God, the Great Architect of the Universe, to remove from our midst our much beloved and worthy Brother, Elisha E. Lott, after a protracted illness of several weeks, from a disease contracted in the army of the Confederate States, where he has been for the last two years, battling for freedom and independence : And WHEREAS, From the important and useful sphere he has occupied for a number of years past, as a charitable and self-sacrificing member of our fraternity, always administering to the wants of the needy and distressed, often at a great expense to his own personal welfare and happiness : Resolved---That we sincerely mourn the loss of Bro. Lott ; that in his death Masonry has sustained a great loss ; that a firm pillar has been taken from our Masonic edifice, and that a useful, kind and generous member has been called to a sphere of greater usefulness. Resolved---That we extend the hand of sympathy to his bereaved family and relatives, commending them to the care of Him who has promised to be a husband to the widow and a father to the orphan. Resolved---That we wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days. Resolved---That a copy of this preamble and resolutions be furnished the deceased Brother’s family, and also furnished to Tyler Reporter, with a request to publish. Fraternally submitted. H. J.
