SALLIE SUSAN DOUGLAS (1844-1872)- Obituary, Smith County, TX =============================================================================== Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm =============================================================================== Obituary found in the files of the Smith County Historical Society Archives. Source unknown. DIED At her home in this city, on the 22d inst. Mrs. Sallie Susan Douglas, wife of James P. Douglas aged 28 years 2 months and 17 days. Mrs. Douglas was the daugher of Blumer and Elizabeth White, who formerly resided near Griffin, Ga., where deceased was born, and from which place they emigrated to Texas in 1853, and settled near Troup, in this county. Since that time, deceased has resided in Smith county; was educated in the schools of this city, and was married to her now bereaved husband March 24th, 1864. Her health began to decline several months ago, which was noted by friends, who exhausted every means within their reach to rescue her, but all effort failed. Returning from a tour for health, on the 5th of July, she entered the portals of her home to go forth no more on earth. She told her friends who gathered around her that her days were few, and predicted with remarkable accuracy the time of her departure. The last few weeks of her life were attended with severe affliction, which she bore with a fortitude and patience as if inspired by more than natural power. She thought and spoke calmly of her dissolution, and awaited its approach with a resignation truly sublime. She regarded death as a mere departure from earth--as a parting with friends here to join those gone before. Her life was brief and beautiful. As a wife and mother, she devoted her life almost entirely to her family--making her home one of happiness to those who enjoyed her love, seeming never to look beyond its little circle for enjoyment. A husband, four little children, and a wide circle of kindred and friends mourn her departure from earth. God knows, in our heart of hearts we sympathize with the Bereaved. H.
