J. Goodman, one of the oldest and one of the best known citizens of Smith county, died this morning at 7:20 o'clock at the family home on North Broadway, following a illness of several weeks. Dr. Goodman was 88 years of age and had lived in this city since 1858. He was a native of North Carolina and was educated for the medical profession in Charleston Medical College and in New York City. He began the practice of his profession in Tyler immediately after arriving in the city and continued without interruption until the war came on when he enlisted in the confederate army and was attached to Douglas' Battery. Serving throughout the civil war with distinction as a regimental surgeon he returned to Tyler and resumed the practice of medicine. He retired some years ago and has since lived quietly at his home. He was active in business pursuits and was one of the promoters of the Cotton Belt railway and also the Tyler Southeastern which later was known as the Short Line. He was an active member of the First Baptist church and no man gave more liberally than he did to further the Master's cause. Dr. Goodman was married to Miss Mary Gaston, daughter of Col. Robert E. Gaston and three children were born to them. Miss Etta, the youngest daughter died some years ago shortly after her mother passed away. Mrs. J. H. LeGrande is now at Ashville, N. C. for her health and Will Goodman makes his home in this city. Funeral arrangements have not been made awaiting advices from Mrs. LeGrande. Mr. LeGrande will arrive in Ashville tomorrow evening. Our entire citizenship joins the relatives in lamenting the death of this well known citizen who spent over sixty years of a life of usefulness in our city. -------------------------------------------------- Tyler Daily Courier-Times, Monday, August 29, 1921 Funeral Services of Dr. W. J. Goodman Tuesday at 5 p.m. The funeral services of Dr. W. J. Goodman will be held Tuesday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the family home on North Broadway and interment will be at Oakwood cemetery. Mr. James H. LeGrande accompaned by Mrs. LeGrande, Dr. Goodman's daughter, are expected home tomorrow from Ashville, North Carolina. They will be met at Longview at 3:30 a.m and be brought to Tyler in an automobile. Captain Gaston and Mrs. Read, brother and sister of the late Mrs. Goodman are here to attend the funeral. Other relatives will probably come from Kaufman and elsewhere.
