So it is with these words that concern Mrs. O'Dell Smith who was taken away by death in Tyler this week. Mrs. Smith was a good woman, modest, wise and generous. In deed and word her life was devoted largely in service of others. She was religious far beyond mere isms, and she translated her religion in terms of life and living. She was a friend. She left a legacy that is not measured in the material, but rather in great qualities of character and in well doing. She was rich in that which endures. Faith, hope and love abided in her and gave her strength and beauty of soul and a long life of usefulness. Words cannot gauge the benefits Mrs. Smith helped to bring to the farm women of Smith County through the provision of a regular market outlet in Tyler for the products of the farm, garden, and kitchen. Reference here is made to the Home Demonstration Market which Mrs. Smith helped to establish and which she operated for nearly 25 years. She made it more than a market place-it became a sort of home away from home for the rural club women and others when they came to Tyler. It became a center of neighborliness. Additionally it gave financial gain and self- pride to the farm women of the county. Mrs. Smith was modest as she went about doing good, and many of her great deeds were unheralded. Her kindhesses were many, and it may be for that reason they were taken for granted. Unselfishness was at the core of her character. Once she expressed her philosophy of life in these words: "I had rather have friends than money." --------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: Fannie died 10 Dec 1952, Tyler, Smith County, Texas, buried: Rose Hill Cemetery, Section F, Tyler, Smith county, Texas.
