Historical Commission Cary White Cary White, a colonist and soldier in the Republic of Texas, was born January 10, 1800. in Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee, the son of Benjamin and Avial Dean White. Benjamin White was born in North Carolina and died in Franklin, Tennessee, in September 1827. Avial White also died in Franklin, in May 1853. Cary married Nancy Halsted (Schultz-Shule-Shulte) in Tennessee. In 1834 they moved to Texas via wagon train. They settled in Waxahachie, where he obtained land grant for one league. After living on this land for two years, Cary sold it for 50 cents per acre and enlisted as a soldier in the Army of the Republic of Texas. For this service, he received Veteran’s Certificate #271 in Robertson County, where he was a resident in 1836. In 1838 he received a land grant in Washington County, and was listed in the 1846 poll was a resident of that county. He was also on the Washington county census for 1850. A farmer, White moved to Bell County between 1850 and 1857. He purchased several hundred acres of land for 25 cents per acre in Wilkinson (Wilkerson) Valley. This became his permanent residence. His sons, Robert M. Wilson H., W. Alexander, and B. Sterling White were Texas Rangers and helped clear Bell County of Indians. They also fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. One son, Maj. Robert M. White, was Killed in this war and his remains were returned to Belton for Burial in South Belton Cemetery. Cary and Nancy White were parents of nine Children, six born in Tennessee and three in Texas. Cary White died March 8, 1894, and his wife, Nancy, died January 8, 1882. Marked graves in Wilkinson Valley Cemetery were moved to Cedar Knob Cemetery when Stillhouse Hollow Lake was built. The information above was found in Stories of Bell County by the Bell Co.
