Capt. Carey W. White passed to his Long home, Wednesday afternoon, at 1 o’clock, March 7th inst., at his residence two and a half miles east of Belton, after a short illness. The deceased was born in Franklin, Tenn., January 10th 1800, being ninety-four at the time of his death. In 1821 he was married to Miss Nancy M. Shule, who was his companion in joy and sorrow, until 1882, when she died. Nine children blessed this union, four are still living. In 1835 he came to Texas, stopping near where Marlin now is, in the winter of 1836. About this time there was a massacre of some families by the Indians near Vicsca. He was elected Captain of a company which pursued them to the Bosque river, but there left the trail and returned. The company with their families started immediately to join Houston’s army at San Jacinto. While journeying near where Millican now is, they were met by a messenger, who brought the intelligence of the defeat of Santa Anna: the company with Capt. White went on and joined Houston with whom they remained until the war closed. Capt. White lived near Millican until peace was declared when he moved to Washington county, and settled near Independence. In 1854 he moved to the county of Bell, where he has since lived to see the fourth generation of his descendants. He was highly respected and stood well in the community where he was known. He was a member of the Texas Veteran association and was buried at the family burying ground in Wilkinson Valley.
