TX The Old Glory cemetery is located on CR 137 North in Stonewall County, Texas. It is 1.1 mile west of the bridge crossing the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River on St. highway 283, between Stamford and Aspermont, Texas. The land for the cemetery, consisting on one acre, was purchased by the Brandenburg Hermann Sons Lodge #229 from Mr. and Mrs. August Stremmel Sr. on November 4, 1908 for $25.00. Most area people were members of the lodge, so they took on the responsibility of maintaining the cemetery. Brandenburg and Sagerton lodges merged on April 1, 1940 and soon after the merger the maintenance of the cemetery was turned over to the community. The original cemetery was named Old Brandenburg, the name given to the town established 3 miles to the West by early German settlers. In 1917, with anti- German sentiment running high because of World War 1, the predominantly German settlement changed its name to Old Glory, and consequently the name of the cemetery was also changed to Old Glory. On April 29, 1958 additional land was purchased on the south side of the cemetery from Herbert and Gladys Vahlenkamp to include a grave of the infant son of O.H. and Alvina Rinn who had died on September 21, 1906 and was buried on the family farm owned by the Rinn family prior to the Vahlenkamp ownership. On October 9, 1972 Herbert and Gladys Vahlenkamp were given the records of the cemetery from Herbert Klump and took over the maintenance at that time. On March 2, 1973 the cemetery association put up a 42 inch chain link fence on the front side (West) of the cemetery. On March 13, 1989 an additional 232' X17' of land was purchased on the east side of the cemetery from Herbert and Gladys Vahlenkamp and Anita Dozier, and a chain link fence was installed on the north, sough and east sides of the cemetery. On April 24, 1991 a tornado crossed over the cemetery, causing extensive damage, toppling and turning around about 80% of the tombstones and covering many with oil from a tank that had been blown over it. Area funeral homes and residents worked together to restore the damages done. On October 17, 2004 a new sign was erected at the entrance on the West side. Jack Gerloff, Jr., an Old Glory native, was instrumental in providing the funds for the material and labor for the sign. Carl Stegemoeller, a welder from Hobbs, N.M., with ties to the Old Glory community designed and built the sign under the supervision of the association officers. Herbert and Gladys Vahlenkamp painted the sign in the Old Glory colors of red, white, and blue. The cemetery is maintained by Stonewall County and is managed by Herbert and Gladys Vahlenkamp. Other members of the association include Kenny Spitzer, Marvin Vahlenkamp, and Ed Wolsch. The front side of the cemetery is on the West side and graves catalogued in this report will be listed in row order from West to East, beginning on the North side. A center entry road divides the cemetery and graves on the North side will be listed in one group and those on the South side will be listed in another group. Information for this document was submitted by Dorothy Baitz Clark, (Mrs. Joe Clark) who was born and raised in the Old Glory community. *** NOTE: This file is wide, drag bottom scroll bar to read entire inscriptions. ===========================================|============|============|==============|======================= LAST NAME FIRST MIDDLE |DOB |DOD |MARKER |INSCRIPTIONS ===========================================|============|============|==============|======================= | | | | NORTH SIDE | | | | | | | | ROW 1 | | | | | | | | RINN Allen |1923 |1937 | |Asleep in Jesus.
