(Dick) Dietrich J. (Dick) Ebeling, a pioneer resident of Swisher County died at the Tulia Hospital Friday night at 10:00 p.m. Mr. Ebeling suffered a stroke of paralysis about 6 months ago and had been bedfast at the home of his brother John Ebeling in Kaffir community during this time. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Presbyterian Church in Happy with Rev. S. T. Sager, Lutheran minister from Lockney in charge. The deceased was born Oct. 10, 1873 in Homfield, Germany. He moved with his family to Glen, Kansas, in 1882. On April 4, 1890 he was confirmed by the St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He came to Happy in 1909. Mr. Ebeling is survived by two brothers and three sisters; John of Happy; Herman of Mexia; Mrs. Fred Jeschke of Okla; Mrs. Marshall Lenszler of Kansas; and Mrs. Horace Botherum of Canyon and a large number of nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements were under direction of Ramsey Funeral Home of Tulia with interment in the Happy Cemetery. The Happy Herald, Sept. 2, 1937 EDMONDS, Mrs. Susie Agnes Funeral services for Mrs. Susie Agrees Edmonds, 75 years old were conducted Tuesday afternoon in the Happy Methodist Church. Mrs. Edmonds, a resident of Happy for 35 years died Saturday evening in an Amarillo hospital following a heart attack suffered several days prior. She was the widow of EVAN EDMONDS who died in 1926. Survivors include seven sons, Roy, San Antonio; Harry and George, Happy; Donald, Grady, NM; Albert, San Diego, CA; Kenneth, Kerrville; and Milton, Iowa City, Iowa; three daughters, Mrs. Wilma Holt, Amarillo; Mrs. Velma Greenfield, Happy; and Mrs. Alice Murdock, Arkansas City, Kansas; 21 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Burial was in Happy Cemetery. The Tulia Herald, 15 January 1953 EDWARDS, Danny Joe Danny Joe Edwards, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Joe Edwards, Kress, died Monday morning in Swisher County Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Victory Chapel, Kress, with Rev. H. B. Harris, pastor, officiating. Interment was in Kress Cemetery under direction of Wallace Funeral Home, Tulia. He is survived by his parents of Kress, paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Edwards of Lamesa and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Callendar of Kress, also several aunts and uncles. The Tulia Herald, 30 April 1953 EDWARDS, Mrs. Lela Funeral services for Mrs. Lela Edwards were conducted at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Central Church of Christ. W. P. Dennis, minister, officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery with services under the direction of Wallace Funeral Home. Mrs. Edwards, 68 years old, died Monday in Amarillo. She was born September 24, 1883 in Kaufman, Texas and was married September 2, 1907 to S. E. EDWARDS. Her husband died in 1939 and a daughter, Mrs. Gilford Goodner in 1938. Survivors are two granddaughters, Gay and Judy Goodner of Amarillo; two brothers, Emmett LaRoe of Lubbock and H. T. LaRoe of Happy; and four sisters, Mrs. Ethel Wesley of Happy, Mrs. R B. Gist of Canyon, Mrs. Millard Dustman and Mrs. Pat Evans. The Tulia Herald, 6 March 1952 EDWARDS, Mrs. R. E. Mrs. R. E. Edwards was carried to an Amarillo hospital, after an auto accident 2 miles west of Canyon Saturday afternoon about 3:45, where she died at 11:05 Saturday night. The Happy Herald, 19 December 1930 EHRESMAN, Mrs. Dan Funeral services for Mrs. Dan Ehresman, 86, pioneer plains woman, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Plainview. She was the widow of the late DAN EHRESMAN who died Nov. 1, 1951. The family moved to a farm east of Kress in 1909 from the North. They moved to Plainview in 1941. Survivors include six children, Bert E., Dan, Roland R. And Mrs. Albert Buhrkuhl, all of Plainview; Homer of Glenrio, NM and Mrs. Paul Arthur of Raton, NM. Burial was in Plainview. She was an active member of the Church of Christ until her health failed. The Tulia Herald, 26 November 1953 EHRESMAN, Daniel Funeral services for Daniel Ehresman, 82, pioneer plains resident, were conducted Saturday afternoon. Ehresman died Thursday night at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Albert Buhrkuhl, of Plainview. Dean Brookshire, minister of the Ninth and Columbia Street Church of Christ, Plainview, where the services were held, officiated. Ehresman was born March 28, 1869 at Tipton, Iowa. He was married to ALICE ELIZABETH PIERCE at Miller, Neb. On January 16, 1894. In 1909 the family moved to Swisher County. Ehresman farmed six miles east of Kress until 1943 when he retired and moved to Plainview. Mr. and Mrs. Ehresman were parents of 8 children, six of whom survive. Survivors are the widow, the following children, Bert, Rolland and Dan Ehresman and Mrs. Albert Buhrkuhl, all of Plainview; Mrs. Paul Arthur, Raton, NM, and Homer Ehresman, Glen Rio, NM; three brothers, Charles Ehresman, twin of Daniel, and Alex Ehresman, both of Tipton, Iowa; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and Will Ehresman, Kearney, Neb.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Achey and Mrs. Lizzie Brown, both of Tipton, Iowa. Interment was in Plainview Memorial Park. The Tulia Herald, 8 November 1951 ELKINS, Charles Owen Charles Owen Elkins, Randall County rancher, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday in his Canyon home, 510 12th St. He had been a resident of Canyon for 10 years. Elkins, 69 years old, had ranched in Randall County and Colorado and farms near Tulia. He was born July 29, 1889 in Johnson County, Ill. He was a member of the Baptist Church of Tulia. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the First Baptist Church of Canyon. Rev. Straus Atkinson, pastor and Rev. Neil Record, pastor of the Tulia Baptist Church, officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Tulia. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ottalee Elkins; two sons, Everett Elkins and Roy Elkins, Tulia; two daughters, Mrs. Edith Vaught, Phoenix and Mrs. Louise Reeves, Oakland; two stepsons, James A. Inman, Lamar, Colo. and Jerre Inman, Canyon; three brothers, E. R. Elms, Amarillo; E. G. Elkins, Lubbock; and A. J. Elkins, Long Beach, Calif.; and a sister Mrs. Elsie Davis, Loveland, Colo. -The Tulia Herald, 20 November 1952 ELLIFF, Bert Funeral services were held for Bert Elliff January 9 at San Benito where he had made his home since 1909. He is survived by two brothers, ten children, twenty-eight grandchildren and many other relatives, some living in Tulia. The Tulia Herald, 14 January 1954 ELLIOTT, John W. John W. Elliott, 70, Lampasas rancher, died Thursday afternoon at his home near Lampasas. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Lampasas First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Donald Price and Rev. P. W. Hirst officiating. Burial was in Capital Memorial Garden near Austin. Elliott was born in Arlington and spent most of his life in Kress where he operated a grain elevator. He moved to Lampasas six years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott lived in Tulia for several months in the early 40's. Their daughter, the former Josephine Elliott, was employed at the AAA office here for several years. Survivors include his wife, the former ELSIE COBB; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Powers of Los Alamos, NM and Mrs. Gordon Brattland of Sacramento, Calif.; two sons, Karl F. of Tyler and Raleigh Smith Elliott of Georgetown; three brothers; four sisters and seven grandchildren. The Tulia Herald, 28 October 1954 ELLIS, Mrs. J. E. Mrs. J. E. Ellis of Dallas, sister of Mrs. J. E. Kuykendall of Happy, passed away at her home Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. She had been paralyzed the last 15 months from an auto accident in 1937. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon and interment was made at Royce City. Mrs. Kuykendall went to Dallas Monday. Mrs. Ellis is survived by her husband and one daughter, four sisters, Mrs. Lee McMillan of Leonard, Mrs. B. H. Garland and Mrs. Ollie Tucker of Slaton and Mrs. Kuykendall of Happy. The Happy Herald, 2 March 1939 ELLIS, Jerry Lynn Jerry Lynn Ellis, 18 month old son of Sgt. and Mrs. Vernon Ellis died Friday morning at 7:00 in an Amarillo hospital after a ten day illness.Sgt. And Mrs. Ellis formerly lived at 803 Lamar St., Amarillo. But for the past several months he had been stationed at Kearney, Neb. They were on furlough visiting Mrs. Ellis' parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Lollar when Jerry Lynn was taken ill. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from the First Methodist Church of Happy with Rev. P. D. Fullimgim, pastor of the Baptist Church of Quitaque, and uncle of the father, conducted the services assisted by the local pastor of the Methodist Church, Rev. Elmer Crabtree. Interment was in Happy Cemetery. The Happy Herald, 16 March 1944 EMBRY, Darrell Gene A 22 year old Tulia construction worker was killed early Saturday morning in an automobile accident two miles east of town on the Love farm to market road. He was Darrell Gene Embry, employee of Duncan Construction Co. Riding with the victim in a 1946 Ford Tudor were Jerry Shoemaker and Betty Green. Shoemaker was uninjured. Wallace Funeral Home attendants said Embry apparently was killed instantly. A passerby discovered the wreckage about 6:30 o'clock Saturday morning. The car did not overturn. Embry, who had lived in Tulia about two years, was born June 27, 1929 in Lexington, Okla. He served in the Navy during World War II. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church with Rev. W. Neil Record, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery under direction of Wallace Funeral Home. Survivors include the father, A. P. Embry; the mother, Mrs. Lola Embry of Tulia; a brother, Vernon Embry of Okla. City; and two sisters, Mrs. Jerry Shoemaker and Joy Ann Embry, both of Tulia. The Tulia Herald, 17 April 1952 EMERY, Mrs. Ruby Delle Funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Delle Emery, 28 years old, were conducted Monday afternoon at the Happy First Methodist Church. Rev. Clyde Smith of Abilene officiated. Mrs. Emery, the former Ruby Delle Lollar, died Thursday night in Bakersfield, Calif., where she had lived for two years. She was born Jan. 23, 1924 in Norton and had lived in Happy from 1927 until she moved to California. Survivors include her husband, B. G. Emery, Bakersfield; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Lollar; a sister, Mrs. Vernon Ellis and a brother, Morris Lollar, both of Amarillo. Burial was in Happy Cemetery. The Tulia Herald, ll September 1952 ENGLEMAN, Frank P. Swisher County sustained a great loss in the sudden and untimely passing, January 31, 1939 of Frank P. Engleman, editor and co-publisher of the Tulia Herald. Mr. Engleman died Tuesday evening at 9:30 at the home of Mrs. M. D. LaVelle in Tulia where he and Mrs. Engleman were attending a Presbyterian choir party. He was striken with heart failure. Last rites were held at the First Presbyterian Church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. J. Hoytt Boles, pastor, officiating and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. He was born March 22, 1880 in Cedar Co., Missouri and spent his boyhood and early manhood in southwest Missouri. He attended Warrensburg State Teachers College and taught school for a number of years after finishing his work there. The greater part of his life, prior to moving to Tulia in 1923, was spent in the U. S. Postal Service. He moved to Tulia and became co-publisher of the Tulia Herald with his brother, J. S. Engleman. He was editor of this paper until his death. Mr. Engleman is survived by his wife, MRS. MABEL ENGLEMAN of Tulia, two sons and their families, Charles Engleman of Walters, Okla., and Allan of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by six brothers and two sisters. The Happy Herald, 2 February 1939 ENGLEMAN, Frank P. Tribute to Frank P. Engleman, 58 years old, as a public benefactor and an editor who supported what he believed right, regardless of friendships was paid in funeral services this afternoon in the Tulia First Presbyterian Church. "This community is shocked," said Rev. J. Hoytt Boles, pastor. "Frank Engleman is missed by every citizen of Tulia, by every reader of his newspaper and by every underprivileged person helped by the various organizations with which he worked. "His principle, his ideal, was true, pure and devout. He stood by it unswervingly though it cost him friendships he valued highly. He supported everything he thought good for the community, and when he didn't think it good he didn't hesitate to withdraw his support." The minister paid special tribute to the unfailing service the editor of the Tulia Herald had given to the First Presbyterian Church. "He helped build this church, he was its secretary for many years and for years he served as an elder," he said "He reared his children in this church, and he was always present in the choir." Mr. Engleman suffered a heart attack and died while at choir rehearsal Monday night. The church was filled to overflowing by citizens from Tulia and other Panhandle towns who gathered to pay final respects. Pallbearers were Grady Briggs, J. A Ebeling, R C. Clennin, C. S. Dudley, and E. K. Hulsey. Honorary pallbearers were W. A. Davis, J. A. Hutchinson, J. W. Miller, W. W. Parker, F. C. Scott, W. C. Crawford, A. B. Parker, A. L. Sharp, M. A. Stucker, W. J. Woolen, T. L. Parker, H. P. Parker and W. S. Tomlinson, all officers of the church. The Wallace Funeral Home directed interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. Tulia, Texas, 2 February 1939 ENGLEMAN, Orval I. Orval I. Engleman, well known in Tulia, died at his home in Fort Worth Wednesday morning. Mr. Engleman had been employed as a linotype operator for the Star-Telegram for several years. He is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon by Rev. J. Hoytt Boles, pastor of the Hemphill Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth. Interment will be in Greenfield, Mo. Engleman was the brother of F P. And J. S. Engleman, former publishers of the Tulia Herald. The Tulia Herald, 12 December 1940 ENGLEMAN, J. S. J.S.Engleman, 70 years old, publisher of the Tulia Herald for more than 25 years died late Wednesday, Oct. 15, at his home near Lake Worth. He suffered a heart attack the identical ailment that in January 1939 claimed the life of his brother, Frank, co-publisher of the Herald, who was stricken at a Presbyterian choir party. At the time of his death, he was a member of Hemphill Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon. Officiating ministers were Rev. Robert Boshen, pastor, of Ft. Worth; Rev. J. Hoytt Boles of Denton, and Rev. Walter Horn of Dallas. Burial was in Ft. Worth. Survivors include his wife ,MRS. ZORA ENGLEMAN; a 19 year old son, David; two daughters, Mrs. Jess Hartwick of San Antonio and Mr.s Alice Jeanne Miller of Virginia; two brothers, Tom Engleman and Guy Engleman both of Greenfield, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Will Scroggs and Mrs. John Poindexter, both of Springfield, Mo. The Tulia Herald, 23 October 1952 ERVIN, J. W. Funeral services for J. W. Ervin, 74, pioneer Swisher County resident, were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Baptist Church. Rev. Harrison, former Kress pastor, officiated, assisted by Rev. Neil Record, Tulia pastor. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery under directions of Wallace Funeral Home. Mr. Ervin died Monday night at the home of R. Lee Ervin, a son, in Chickasha, Okla. He had been in failing health for many months. He came to Tulia in 1901 where he farmed and ranched and later served as county tax assessor. Later he moved to Kress where he operated a hardware business. He moved from Kress in 1944 to Mt. Ida, Ark. Survivors include his widow, two sons, R Lee of Chickasha and Wayne of Crane, Texas and seven grandchildren. J. W. Ervin of Tulia is a grandson. The Tulia Herald, 13 March 1952 ESTES, Mrs. Anna Mrs. Anna Estes passed away at her home in Dallas, Thursday Sept. 7, after a lingering illness. She was a sister of the late Mrs. N. T. Woodall, mother of Mrs. L. E. Talbert. Two sisters and one brother survive. They are Mrs. Hattie Williams and Mrs. Mamie Bolton of Okla. City and Sam P. Copeland of Ft. Worth. Mrs. Estes' husband practiced medicine in Hereford a number of years ago. The Happy Herald, 14 September 1944 ESTES, Melvin Christopher Melvin Christopher Estes, 46 years old, died of heart failure Friday afternoon as he was in the process of filling a drill on a farm about eight miles north of Tulia. He was employed by Otis Harman. He was found about 4 o'clock by Ivers Galins. Estes was born Aug. 6, 1906 in Meriwether County, Georgia. He came to Texas in 1950. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in Wallace Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. W. Neil Record, Baptist Pastor, officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, a stepdaughter, three sons, three brothers, a sister and his father. The Tulia Herald, 20 October 1952 EUBANKS, Ballard Wilson Word was received this week of the death of Ballard Wilson Eubanks, former Tulia resident, who died in Fort Worth late Sunday afternoon. During his residence here, he was a deputy sheriff. He served for six years on the Fort Worth police force. He is a cousin of John Rice of Tulia. The Tulia Herald, 16 May 1940 EVANS, John Eldon John Eldon Evans, 43 years old, Tulia, died of a heart attack Saturday morning in the home of his brother, Everett Evans. He lived with his brother while working on R. B. Elliott's farm 25 miles north of Tulia, and spent weekends with his mother, Mrs. Anna Evans, 219 North Dallas Ave. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Tuesday morning, Rev. C. G. Sewell assisted by J. B. Rowan of Dallas, officiated. Mr. Evans joined the Union Hill Baptist Church in 1929. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Evans; one brother, Everett Evans and two sisters, Mrs. G. A. Ford of San Francisco and Mrs. J. G. Ford of Canyon. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery under direction of Wallace Funeral Home. The Tulia Herald, 22 June 1950 EVANS, Henry Crawford The last rites for Henry Crawford Evans, 83, Happy stock farmer, were conducted from the Wayside Church by Rev. R C. Malone of Plainview Sunday afternoon at 3:00. Burial was in the Wayside Cemetery with the Griggs-Thompson Funeral Home of Canyon in charge. Mr. Evans lived 11 miles east of Happy, died Saturday night He had resided in the Happy community since 1891. Survivors are the widow, MRS. MARY FRANCES EVANS; two sons, J. R Evans of Kenna, NM; and S. A. Evans of Happy; and five daughters, Mrs. F. H. Wann, Tuolumne, Calif; Mrs. J. R Roberts, Albuquerque, NM; Mrs. G. E. Wesley; Mrs. J. W. Wesley and Mrs. George Schaeffer, all of Happy. The Happy Herald, 17 February 1938 EVANS, Jess and Murray Father and son of a pioneer Swisher County family met their death from natural causes Tuesday. Jess Evans, 87, a resident of Tulia, died at 3:00 Tuesday afternoon at his home. His son, Murray Evans,60, succumbed early Tuesday morning at his home in the Union Hill community from a heart attack. Evans and son came to Swisher County 45 years ago from McLellan County near Waco. They settled about 15 miles NE of Tulia. The family has been active in ranching and farming ever since. Double funeral services were held at 3:00 Wed. Afternoon in the First Baptist Church of Tulia. Rev. H. C. Huff conducted the rites. Burial was in Tulia cemetery under the direction of Ramsey and Sons funeral directors. Survivors of Jess Evans include four daughters, Mrs. Lige Lyncy of Stafford; Mrs. Nana Armstrong of Dumas, Ariz.; Mrs. Bessie Partlow and Mrs. Howard George, both of whom live in the Union Hill community. Two sons, Dale and Pat Evans, who also live at Union Hill, survive. Immediate survivors of Murray Evans are his wife, MRS. ANNIE EVANS, and two daughters and two sons. The daughters are Mrs. Guy Ford of Canyon and Mrs. Mamie Ford of San Francisco, Calif.; the sons are John and Everett Evans who live with their mother. The Happy Herald, 23 July 1936 EVANS, J. M. (Uncle Dick) Uncle Dick Evans, 67, one of Happy's most beloved pioneer citizens, died Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 when his auto overturned a half mile south of Happy. Services were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sam LaRoe. The deceased, who had been a resident of this vicinity since 1899, was married to MISS EMMA DALE HARRISON, Dec. 22, 1887. Four daughters were born to this union, two of whom died in infancy. Mr. Evans was a member of the Christian Church. Uncle Dick came to Wayside in 1899. His family came to Texas a year later. For eight years Mr. Evans carried the mail from the stage line of old Happy to Wayside on horseback, and later drove the mail in a hack drawn by two mules. He moved to Happy in 1909. More recently he had been engaged in the oil and cattle business. Mrs. Evans died in 1934; Mr. Evans is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Sam LaRoe and Mrs. Hugh Pollard, both of Happy and three grandchildren, H. L. Jr. and Evans Holland and Dixie LaRoe and by three brothers, H. C. Evans of Wayside, John Evans of Arkansas and Joe Evans of Arizona. The deceased had made his home with his daughter here since the death of Mrs. Evans two years ago. Officiating at the services were Rev. T. D. Sumrall of Amarillo assisted by Rev. M. M. Robinett of Floydada. Burial was in Happy Cemetery under direction of Griggs-Thompson Funeral Directors. The Happy Herald, 14 January 1937 EVANS, Mrs. J. M. A shadow of gloom passed over Happy Saturday night, Nov. 3 when the word spread that one of our dear beloved pioneers, Mrs. J. M. Evans, had passed from this life of pain and sorrow to a kingdom prepared for the redeemed. She was happy and received comfort in the promise that God gives the victory and takes away the pain of leaving this life to become a member of the marching band of saints in glory. Emma Dale Harrison was the daughter of William Franklin and Virginia Harrison. She was born in Nevada County, Arkansas, Sept. 23, 1869. At the time of her death she was 65 years of age. The deceased was married to J. M. EVANS in 1887, Dec. 22 of this year being their 47th wedding anniversary. They moved to Texas and settled near Wayside in January 1900. In 1908 they moved to Happy where they have resided to the present time. Mrs. Evans was a member of the Baptist Church. Besides her husband, J. M. Evans, the deceased is survived by two children, Mrs. Ona M. Holland and Mrs. Dale D. LaRoe. Ola Mae and Bertie Evans both died in childhood. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Minnie Tonnemaker of Yakima, Washington, three half sisters, Mrs. Flossie Clark, Mrs. Massie Ramsey, Miss Vera Harrison and three halfbrothers, George, James and Eric Harrison, all of Badcaw, Arkansas. Three grandchildren also survive. They are H. L. Jr. and Evans Holland and Dixie Emma LaRoe. Death occurred on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 11 p.m. Services were conducted from the First Baptist Church Sunday afternoon by Rev. M. M. Robinett, assisted by Rev. T. D. Sumrall of Amarillo and Rev. H. C. Akers. Interment was in the local cemetery under direction of the Griggs-Thompson Funeral Home, Canyon. The Happy Herald, 8 November 1934 EVANS, Mrs. Joe G. Friends and relatives were present Tuesday afternoon to pay their last respects to Mrs. Joe G. Evans who passed away at Northwest Hospital in Amarillo, Sunday morning. Four pastors, Rev. J. M. Hix of Canyon, Rev. T. D. Sumrall of Amarillo, Rev. M. M. Robinett and Rev. H. C.Akers spoke the service members of the Happy Chapter of Eastern Star attended the service in a body. Griggs-Thompson were in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Bertie Mae Evans passed away Sunday morning at 6:30 in the Northwest Hospital in Amarillo after a brief illness she leaves her husband, JOE G. EVANS, two sons, Wayne who graduates this week from Hereford High School, and Raylon, a small boy ten years old. Besides her immediate family, she leaves her father B. J. Mulkey, two sisters, Miss Minnie Mulkey and Mrs. Herbert Wilkes, a brother, Fred Mulkey, all of Happy; a sister in Amarillo, Mrs. Scott Ford, a sister in Plainview, Mrs. Charles Smith, a sister, Mrs. Jess Christian of Georgetown, and a sister and brother, Mrs. Joe Waite and Walter Mulkey of Los Angeles, Calif. She was the former Bertie Mulkey and was born in Benjamin, Knox County, Texas, moving to Happy with her parents when she was 3 years old. She finisher her high school education in Canyon and attended Clarendon College and West Texas State Teachers' College. She was converted when a child of 11 years and has been a faithful Christian since. She married Joe G. Evans of Happy, on April 1, 1914 and to this union were born 3 little boys. Wayne who is now sixteen, Joseph Warren who died in infancy, and Raylan who is ten years old. The family had made their home in Happy until they moved to Hereford in 1931. Mrs. Evans was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star and the First Baptist Church of Happy. The Happy Herald, 23 May 1935 EVANS, Josiah Funeral services for Josiah Evans, 85 year old pioneer, stock farmer of the Happy community who died at Mena, Ark., were held here Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the First Baptist Church. Services were conducted by Rev. John O. Scott of Teague, assisted by the local pastor, Rev. Byron Todd and Rev. W. E. Barnes, pastor of the Hereford Baptist Church. He was the father of ten children, eight of whom are living. They are: Mrs. A. W. Montgomery, Miss Odessa and Charles Evans of Happy, Howard of Phoenix, AZ, Mrs. Fannie Read and Mrs. Annie Lee Evans of Mena, Ark., Joe G. Evans of Hereford and Mrs. J. C. Cox of Las Cruces, NM. He also leaves 15 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Hugh Holland, Roy Smith, Howard Stephenson, Dave Evans, Sam LaRoe and Fred Hext. Burial was in the Happy Cemetery under the direction of Griggs-Thompson Funeral Home. Happy, Texas, 16 January 1944 EVANS, Josiah Josiah Evans, pioneer of this area, died Monday evening in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fannie Read of Mena, Ark. where he had been in failing health for several months. He was born July 13, 1858 near Springfield, Ill. And came to Caldwell Co. Texas when eight where in Oct. 1899 he moved to the Plains and has lived here for the past 46 years. He was orphaned when a small boy and assumed the responsibilities of a man at the age of 13. June 25, 1875 he was married to MISS ARAMINTA ELIZABETH HAND who passed away Sept. 19, 1933. Ten Children, eight of which are still living, survive: Mrs. A. W. Montgomery, Miss Odessa and Charles Evans of Happy; Joe G. of Hereford; Howard of Phoenix, Ariz; Mrs. Fannie Read and Mrs. Annie Lee Evans of Mena, Ark. And Mrs. J. C. Cox of Las Cruces, NM; the eldest son, William Samuel, died at the age of 18 months. The youngest daughter, Mrs. Eugenia Neff and her firstborn baby, Carl, passed away at age 23. He also leaves a brother, George W. Evans of Lorena, Texas, who is now 93, yet strong in mind and body and is the only living child of a large family. There are also 15 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He united with the Baptist Church early in life. He helped develop and settle up four frontiers, sharing all the hardships and inconvenience of the less fortunate, as well as his time and means if in so doing he could alleviate the suffering from illness or lack of food. When he couldn't finance a need alone, he would ride horseback for days and days, never returning home until he had secured sufficient funds to save a life or perhaps replace the loss of a horse that the crop might be put in. Or it might be funds to replace a home that had been lost by fire. He always took the initiative in a good road movement or whatever was most needed in a rural community. Not only did he minister to the physical needs of man but to the spiritual as well. He helped organize school and church in his own community and those adjoining. Funeral services were held in the First Baptist Church of Happy Friday afternoon at 3:00. Burial was in Happy Cemetery. Rev John O. Scott of Teague, TX, a former pastor, conducted the services assisted by the local pastor, Rev. Byron F. Todd and Rev. Barnes, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hereford. The Happy Herald, 13 January 1944 EVANS, Mrs. Josiah Mrs. Araminta Elizabeth Evans, 69, pioneer wife of Josiah Evans, died at her home near Happy Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 6:40 p.m. Besides her husband, she is survived by 3 sons and 5 daughters. They are: Mrs. A. W. Montgomery, Happy; Mrs. K. M. Read, Mena, Ark.; Mrs. R B. Evans, Happy; Mrs. J. C. Cox, Hatch, NM; Mrs. Odessa Evans, Happy; J. G. Evans, Hereford; J. H. Evans, Santa Rosa, Calif and C. S. Evans, Happy; one son and one daughter having preceded her in death. Other survivors are 15 grandchildren and two brothers H. Hand of Waco and S. L. Hand of Vrain, NM. Mrs. Evans had been ill for several months but was confined to her bed only a few days. She was born in Parker County near Weatherford, in 1864. When quite a little girl she moved with her parents to Waco, McLennan County, where on June 25, 1879 she was married to JOSIAH EVANS. In 1890 she moved with her family to Vernon. Coming to the Plains in 1899, they settled near Happy where they have resided for the past 34 years. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. John O. Scott at the Calvary Baptist Church, Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock with interment in Happy Cemetery. Pallbearers were: H. L. Holland, C. L. Gatten, Dave Evans, J. H. Stephenson, Alden Mann, J. H. Knapp, S. C. Whitman and John Burgess. The Happy Herald, 21 September 1933 EVANS, Lavon Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Rucker attended the funeral of their nephew, Lavon Evans, at Cheyenne, Okla. on May 21. The eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Evans drowned while wading in a stream. The Happy Herald, 30 May 1940 EVANS, Robert Benjamin Robert Benjamin Evans was born Oct. 18, 1887 near Waco in McLennan County, Texas. He died August 12, 1941 at his home in Happy. It was on August 12, 1891 that he came as a child less than four years of age to Swisher County with his parents. He therefore claimed Swisher County as his home for 50 years to a day. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Thursday August 14, at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Ed L. Hawthorne, pastor, officiating and Rev. W. E. Barnes, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hereford assisting. Burial was in Happy Cemetery under the direction of Griggs-Thompson Funeral Home of Canyon. Mr. Evans was married Dec. 30, 1914 to MISS ANNIE LEE EVANS at the home of her father, Josiah Evans, by Rev. J. A. Weathers, pastor of the New Hope Church which was later moved to Union Hill. Mr. Evans lived in Happy 16 years. To this union one child was born, Ann Elizabeth, better known as "Jackie", the nickname given her by her grandfather. Mr. Evans was a member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife and one daughter, Mrs. J. F. Johnson of Memphis, Tenn. Three sisters, Miss Minnie Evans of Happy; Mrs. Henry Potter of Tulia; Mrs. Bruce McCormick of Amarillo; four brothers, Tom, Joe and Jeffie Evans of Happy and Willis Evans of Nevada. The deceased had been in failing health for several years. His only child paid tribute to him by placing his cattle brand, the "Roman Cross A" in a floral wreath at the head of his mound. The Happy Herald, 14 August 1941 EVANS, Mrs. Silas Alfred Funeral services for Mrs. Silas A Evans of the Fairview community were held at Wayside Thursday afternoon, May 17, with interment in Wayside Cemetery. Rev. Taft Holloway, pastor of the Fairview Baptist Church, conducted the service. Elsie Helen Bayliff was born January 11, 1900 in the State of Illinois. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bayliff who now live at Clinton, Ark. On Nov. 23, 1920 she was married to SILAS ALFRED EVANS who survives her. To this union were born five sweet girls, Evelyn age 12, Myrtle 10, Florene 6, Loveta 5, and Elsie Marie 3. All are living and were present at her last rites. Besides her husband she leaves two brothers and three sisters to mourn her going. In 1929 she joined the Methodist Church, later becoming a member in a Missionary Baptist Church. After 4 years of illness, she quietly passed away about 6:00 a.m. May 16, 1934. The Happy Herald, 24 May 1934 EVANS, Sylvester One man was killed instantly and two others possibly seriously injured when a car and a cattle truck ran head-on at the northern edge of Tulia on Highway 87 Saturday night at about 11:00. Sylvester Evans of Plainview, owner of the car, was killed instantly, in the crash which demolished both vehicles. The Happy Herald, 11 December 1941 EVANS, William E. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 10 at the Calvary Baptist Church, Mineral Wells for William E. (Happy) Evans. Interment was in Comyn cemetery in Comanche County following a brief service in the Comyn Baptist Church. Mr. Evans was stricken with a heart attack early Monday morning and died a short time later in the local hospital. He was 52 years old. Mrs. Evans if the former MARY CASEBEER of Tulia. Other survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Martha Rushing of Mineral Wells, Mrs. Joyce Lauderdale of Houston, Mrs. Zoe Cody of Stephenville; two sons, Norman and Nathan Evans of Mineral Wells. The Tulia Herald, 19 August 1954 EVANS, Willis In reply to a letter which she had written to her brother, Willis Evans of Twin Falls, Nebraska, a few days ago, Miss Minnie Evans of Happy received a reply from another party to the effect that Willis Evans died on Dec. 2, 1938 and was buried at Twin Falls. Death was attributed to a heart ailment. Mr. Evans left Swisher County more than 40 years ago. He worked on a ranch in Montana for many years and at the time of his death he was employed with a construction company. He did not have a family. Miss Evans had written her brother to tell him of the serious illness of another brother (R. B.) Bob Evans. The letter which she received in reply was written on August 12, the day that Bob passed away.
