Democrat: Everything passed off pleasantly at the Centennial barbecue here on the 25th ult., except the killing of a man by the name of Alfred Ward. Ward was followed from Wise County, and found here by a young man by the name of Applewhite, who charged him with various thefts from himself and others in that county. Applewhite attempted to arrest him but with no assistance. Applewhite seized him, but Ward being the stronger of the two broke loose, when Applewhite fired, inflicting a dangerous wound. This attracted the Sheriff which soon arrested both parties. On their way, a short distance from the public square, Ward snatched the sheriff’s pistol from his belt, and broke, firing upon the crowd as he ran. He was pursued and killed near the edge of town. A man by the name of Brown, probably an accomplice of Ward’s left his horse hitched to the rack and ran off as the time and has not yet put in an appearance. Applewhite is under arrest and will undergo an examination.
