The Dallas Morning News, Dallas, TX, Page 3 April 21, 1898
Abilene, Tex., April 20-About 250 federal troops, Companies D and H of the 
eighteenth regiment, arrived here at 3 o’clock this afternoon from El Paso 
over the Texas and Pacific on their way to New Orleans.  They were met at the 
depot by an immense crowd of people, who greeted them with every demonstration 
of enthusiasm, not, however, unmixed, with sadness and regret.  A large per 
cent of the crowd was ladies.  The public schools were dismissed and the crowd 
was augmented by several hundred school children, who were wild with delight 
over the presence of “our soldiers.”  The train stopped for thirty minutes and 
the children climbed into the cars and passed through them in a steady 
stream.  Many of the “big regulars” stopped and petted them affectionately as 
they passed.  Before the train left the regimental band played several 
patriotic airs, which were cheered roundly by the crowd.  The train started 
off on very short notice, and as a number of school children were still on the 
train and the soldiers had mingled with the crowd there was general 
confusion.  Some of the officers were accompanied by their families, and at 
the starting Lieut, Lewis’ little girl had her feet very seriously crushed by 
some accident on the train.  The train after proceeding a short distance 
slowed up and Dr. Grizzard was summoned to attend the little girl.  The crow, 
not knowing what was the matter, surged forward and again formed around the 
train.  The regulars seemed highly elated over their reception and generally 
expressed a hearty desire to try their mettle with the Spaniards.
