Vernon J. Voyles, 23, Abilenian with the 112th Cavalry in New Britain was killed in action on 4 January 1944, according to a War department message to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Voyles. Corporal Voyles is believed to be the only Abilenian who participated in the Arawe landing in mid-December known to have been killed. His parents, who reside at 1201 South 13th, received a letter from Corporal Voyles dated 22 December 1943 in which he said that he was okay at the time. The Abilene man volunteered for the service three years ago last November and had served 18 months overseas. He was taking a post graduate course at Abilene high school at the time he entered the service. Born in Commerce, he moved to Abilene 13 years ago with his parents. He was a member of the Corinth Baptist church.
