All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************** The Abilene Reporter News Abilene, Taylor County, Texas Thursday, January 6, 1944 Lawn Marine Dies in Action LAWN, Jan. 5 In a telegram received 23 December 1943, Mrs. Minnie L. Williams of Ovalo, was informed by the Navy Department that her son, Pfc. Alvin R. Williams, 19, of the Marine Corps had been killed in action. He was last heard from 18 November 1943 when he was presumably stationed somewhere in the Gilbert Islands. He said then that he was "having a pretty hard time." Private Williams was graduated from the Winters High school and volunteered into the Marines with his brother, James Norris Williams, 21, who had recently been honorably discharged from the Marines following injuries received in the Guadalcanal campaign. He is now home recuperating. Survived by his mother; 5 brothers - Morris, working in the shipyards at Vancouver, Washington; Noel and Edward, both employed by the Ben E. Keith Company of Abilene; J.W. in the grocery business at MIdland; James Norris; 2 daughters[sisters] - Mrs. Claude Whitaker of Vancouver, Wash.; Mrs. Justin Leo Nix of California, where she is secretary to the American Air craft company.
