Bass died this morning. Death came painlessly and although Dr. Bass was unconscious, he had been up to a few hours before the end, in the full possession of his mental faculties. Death occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Anna Cocke, 1443 North Second Street. The cause was a general physical collapse, brought on by a chronic complaint of bronchitis and a frail constitution dating back to the years of his early boyhood. Dr. Bass was cognizant, for his called his children and grandchildren about his bed and gave them his final blessing. When he became too weak to speak he drifted off into the state of unconsciousness that foreran the end with a smile of peace on his lips. The funeral arrangements had not been made. Dr. John Henry Bass was born in Adams County, Mississippi in July of 1839, which made him almost 72 years of age at the time of his death. He was married in Wood County, Texas in 1863 and immediately thereafter to the army of General Bragg, in which he rendered the South distinguished service as a surgeon. After the war he settled at Sulphur Springs, later removing to Terrell. In 1885, 25 years ago, he came to Abilene living in Abilene, continuously from that date to this. His wife died in January 1907 and a daughter, Mrs. Hardwicke, died in 1905. Dr. Bass is survived by two sons, Charles S. Bass and Henry J. Bass and one daughter, Mrs. Anna Cocke, the last two named of Abilene. His only brother, Sidney Bass of Terrell, was at the beside when death came, as was also the latterŐs daughter, Miss Amy. For 40 years Dr. Bass was a member of the Methodist church. No man was ever more beloved and esteemed than he. The funeral service will be held from St. PaulŐs Methodist church tomorrow. Rev. Barnes, Fort And Hicks are absent at Clarendon attending the Northwest Texas conference. Dr. H.A. Boaz of Fort Worth was named as available. Active Pallbearers: T.S. Rollins, E.B. Bynum, George B.
