Childers, for 17 years a leading citizen of Abilene, died at the family residence in Abilene Saturday, 13 July 1918, after an illness of five yearsŐ duration. The deceased was born in Grant County, Kentucky, 19 September 1841 and moved to Texas when a boy 14 years of age settling in McKinney, Collin County. He was married to Miss Martha A. Gunter in 1864. He moved to Abilene in 1901. Col. Childers fought in the Civil War with Drew Middleton, C.C. Edwards and D.W. Wristen. He was a member of the 25th Legislature of Texas and of the Constitutional Convention to organize New Mexico and was a member in good standing of the Masonic Lodge of Abilene and the Elk Lodge. Survived by his widow and five children: T.G. and W.H. Childers, Mesdames Dora Reagan and Z. Z. Savage and Miss Rosa Childers, all of whom were at the bedside when death came. Funeral held at the family residence, corner of North 5th and Lavaca streets, Sunday and will be conducted by the Masons.
