Kirby, 83, Abilene attorney and former mayor died this morning at his home at South 14th Street and LoverÕs Lane, after an illness of 15 months. He served as Abilene mayor from 1907 to 1919. About five years ago he and Mrs. Kirby gave the city a park of 11 acres which had been designated as Kirby Park. A noted hunter he brought in his deer every year until recent illness prevented his making trips. Years ago he started a custom of giving a box of oranges every Christmas season at the courthouse to employees. Last Christmas he was unable to go to the courthouse, but the box of oranges was sent just the same. He was a member of the Taylor County and State Bar Association. Mr. Kirby was born in LaGrange, Georgia, 19 November 1865, son of Mr. And Mrs. Moses Russell Kirby. His father was a quartermaster in the Confederate Army. He came to Texas in 1887, locating in Wood county, where he engaged in farming. He studied law at night and passed his bar examination at Anson where he had moved in 1889, Three years later, he moved to Abilene and became a member of the legal firm of Kirby, Kirby & Legett. The late K.K. Legett and A.H. Kirby, a brother, were the other members. Mr. Kirby and Miss Lou Hale of Temple were married 29 October 1890. He united with the Baptist church in which he was a leading layman. Survived by his widow, brother, two sisters, five children, four grandchildren. His brother, T.H. Kirby, lives at Miami, FL; Sisters are: Mrs. T.H. Mizzell and Mrs. W.H. Golson, both of Montgomery, AL. Daughters are: Mrs. Rubiedick Hawes of Abilene, Mrs. J.H. Ferrel of Breckenridge; sons Ð Russell of Abilene, W.H. of Hale Center, Lawrence Kirby of Fort Bliss. Grandchildren Ð Peggy Hawes of Washington, DC, Jerry Ferrel of Austin, Hugh Hawes, Jr. of Abilene, Billy Hale Kirby of Hale Center.
