Barrett, 72, founder and first president of Abilene Christian College, died Friday in Henderson, Tenn. He had been ill three years. He became the second ACC president to die within the year, R.L. Whiteside of Denton, third president from 1909 to 1911, died in January. Funeral will be held in Henderson, Tenn., Barrett's home for the past several years. News of his death was received in Abilene by Charles H. Robertson, head of the ACC Bible department and a member of the first faculty under Barrett's administration. Mr. Barrett. a gospel preacher from Tennessee, established ACC in 1906, then known as the Childers Classical Institute. He served as president until 1908. The college, then located in the west part of Abilene, began with an enrollment of 75 students. Mr. Barrett was succeeded by B.L. Darden as president in 1908. He is survived by his widow Abilene Reporter-News Saturday, 7 April 1951
