He had ridden his horse into the water and the horse reared and threw him off and he was drowned. The horse evidently hurt him, as he was a good swimmer and would otherwise have gotten out all right. Taylor County News Abilene, Taylor County, Texas Friday, July 23, 1897 -------------- The Abilene Reporter News Abilene, Taylor County, TX 17 July 1897 Merkel, Texas July 12, 1897 Last evening Raymond Keller, a young man of 23 years, was drowned in a stock tank of Col. J.S. GoodwinÕs ranch 6 miles north of Merkel. Mr. Keller and another gentleman were bathing in the tank and Mr. Keller attempted to ride his horse across the tank he was thrown from his horse in water 10 feet deep, he could not swim and was drowned. The deceased had no known relatives. He was raised by Mr. Morrison on Mulberry. He had been working for Mr. Goodwin some 12 months.
