All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************** Marcus L Dale Pvt CSA Marcus L Dale was born 17 Apr 1834 in Burke County NC. He moved with his parents from Burke County NC to Cherokee County NC but then remained in Cherokee County when his father John Henry Dale, his mother and 09 brothers and sisters moved, in a covered wagon (just prior to the Civil War), to Titus County TX. One sister died (probably either in NC or TN) during the trip to Texas Marcus married prior to 1860 in NC to Elizabeth (unknown maiden name/unknown parents) They had one son born in NC and then the family moved to Polk County TN prior to 1862. He joined the Confederate Army at Benton TN on 01 May 1862 (for three years or the war) as a Private and was assigned to Company “K”, 59th Tennessee Infantry Regiment (also called - 1st (Eakin’s) Tennessee Battalion: Cooke’s Regiment: 59th Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment). The 59th TN Inf. Reg. was organized in May 1862 and was mustered into Confederate service on 30 Jun 1862. Upon being mustered into Confederate service the Fifty-Ninth Tennessee Infantry was ordered to duty in the Department of East Tennessee. The regiment served in that command until late 1862. Transferred to Mississippi, the unit served in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana and then in the Army of Vicksburg. The regiment was captured when that City fell on 04 July 1863. Subsequently exchanged and paroled, the unit returned to service in the Department of East Tennessee. There it served as a mounted infantry unit for the remainder of the War. Marcus participated in 08 different Campaigns, Skirmish, Retreats, Engagements, Battles, Siege and Assaults before the Surrender of Vicksburg. He was captured “on the retreat from Big Black at Vicksburg MS on 17 May 1863.” His name appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War, captured by the Army of the Tennessee, and sent to Memphis, Tenn on 25 May 1863. He was next sent on 15 Jun 1863 from Camp Morton, Ind to Fort Delaware, Del; and from there he was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland and then on to Fort Columbus, New York arriving there on 25 Sep 1863. Marcus was transferred on 10 Feb 1865 to Coxes Landing, James River, Virginia and on 14 Feb 1865 he was exchanged. He next appears on a Muster Roll of a detachment of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee, near Richmond, Va on 17 Feb 1865. For Marcus the Civil War was over; he returned to his home in Eastern Tennessee where his name appears as signature to Oath of Allegiance to the United States, subscribed and sworn to at Chattanooga Tenn on 25 March 1865. Marcus remained in Polk County Tenn until about 1870. He next took his wife and three sons and moved to Saline County (near Little Rock) in Arkansas. He and his wife had two children born in AR , a daughter in 1872 and a son in 1874. We find Marcus L Dale in Saline County on the 1870 AR Census Index. Both Marcus and his wife Elizabeth died near Little Rock AR after 1874. Marcus L Dale is the brother of Pvts Albert Jerome Dale, Marshal Norman Dale and Jefferson E Dale, CSA, all from Titus County TX and who were members of Walkers “Greyhounds.”
