All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** From the files of June Tuck COMMANDER, ALEX - Mount Pleasant, Texas, Aug. 5, 1909 - A negro, Alex Commander, died here today. He was said to have been 117 years old, and is believed to have been the oldest person in the United States. He was born a slave, and prior to the civil war he fell into the hands of W. R. Edwards, one of the pioneers of this section, and one of the early day sheriffs of this county. After emancipation, he lived continuously with Mr. Edwards until the latter's death, about nine years ago. At that time he took up his home with Dr. W. H. Blythe, a son-in-law of Mr. Edwards, and continued as a servant in his family until his death. (S.S. Gazette)
