West Texas news: May 26, 1996 Man arrested in strangulation of woman AUSTIN (AP) - Police have charged a 23-year-old Bastrop man with murdering a woman who disappeared from her Bastrop County home May 3. David Alan Lawhon, whom a sheriff's investigator described as an acquaintance of the woman, was being held Saturday in the Bastrop County Jail. Bond had not been set. The body of Mary Ann Arldt, 33, was found about 8:30 a.m. Friday in some brush near Texas 95, about seven miles north of Bastrop. The site is about two miles north of Lawhon's residence. Lawhon was arrested and led investigators to the body, said Texas Rangers Sgt. Tommy Ratliff. An autopsy showed Arldt had been strangled, said Bastrop County Justice of the Peace Tommy Moseley. Arldt had been reported missing by her boyfriend, with whom she lived five miles north of Elgin. Bastrop County Sheriff's Lt. David Campos said Lawhon is a friend of the boyfriend's family. 2 killed, 4 hurt in accident near Brackettville By MARLA DIAL Staff Writer Two people were killed and four others injured in a collision early Saturday near Brackettville, the Department of Public Safety said. A DPS spokesman in Del Rio said the accident occurred about 7 miles east of Brackettville around 4:45 a.m., when a truck carrying five people collided with a commercial tractor-trailer. The truck's driver, 15-year-old Kelly Jean Kessler of New Braunfels, died at the scene, the spokesman said. A passenger in the truck, 18-year-old James Dylla of Seguin, died about 45 minutes later. Neither victim wore a seat belt, the official said. The driver of the tractor-trailer - Braulio Crispin Palacio, 28, of Laredo - suffered minor abrasions in the accident, but three other passengers in the truck Kessler was driving were more seriously injured. The DPS spokesman said James Chessher, 18, of McQueeney, sustained internal injuries. He was listed in critical condition at University Medical Center in San Antonio. So was 18-year-old David Dylla of Seguin, who also suffered internal injuries. James Reigle, 20, of New Braunfels, was listed in fair condition at Uvalde Memorial Hospital, where he was being treated for cuts and bruises. DPS officials say Kessler fell asleep while driving and pulled the truck into the path of the oncoming commercial rig. West Texas news: May 29, 1996 By RICK SMITH Staff Writer Stories about two special West Texans, Jason Olson and Bobbie Bryson: Today would have been Jason Olson's 21st birthday. Friends and family will gather in Santa Rita Park at 9 a.m. to plant a tree in his memory. ``Anyone's welcome to attend,'' said Jason's mom, Susi Olson. ``We're going to play his songs, his music.'' Jason was killed in March after a pickup struck the parked car he was sitting in. The collision occurred about 10 miles north of San Angelo. The driver of the pickup has been indicted for intoxicated manslaughter in the death. ``It's so tempting not to get out of bed in the morning,'' his mother said. ``Every time you wake up, you live the whole thing again. I keep expecting him to drive home late at night and come in. ``You think it will get easier with time, but it doesn't. It gets harder.'' Jason, she said, ``was a great kid. Oh, like all kids, he could be difficult and trying at times. But he was really talented, creative. And he was just coming to the best part of his life.'' Susi says the best way to remember her son is to keep his memory alive by keeping his music alive. Jason was a talented musician who played at local clubs and was set to go on tour this summer. ``His music has so much range,'' she said, ``from some really funny pieces to some wonderfully touching music. ``There was so much to Jason.'' Thanks to all of you who have sent cards and gifts for Bobbie Bryson. Brooke Addams, Piccolo the Clown and I leave early Thursday for Memphis to deliver your West Texas bundles of love to Bobbie. If you want to send something, drop it by K-LITE or the Standard-Times by 5 p.m. today. The young Ozona basketball player's problems certainly have touched a lot of people. We have cards from schoolchildren in places ranging from Fort Stockton to Rocksprings. We have cards from New Hope Baptist Church in Sonora and an incredibly cute teddy bear from a group of people who signed themselves ``the folks of Llano.'' We have cards and gifts from Iraan, Odessa, Coahoma, Vancourt, San Angelo, Brady, Brownwood, Miles and other places across West Texas. American Airlines is sending three plane tickets to Memphis and back for Bobbie's family. Bishop Pfeifer's sending her a medallion blessed by the Pope. San Angelo first-grader Daphne Cheek's sending Bobbie her favorite stuffed animal ``because it'll make her feel better.'' We are so spread out here in West Texas that sometimes we forget how close we all are. ``You don't know me, Bobbie,'' wrote one Iraan Junior High School student, ``but I know you. ``And you don't know how much everyone cares. God bless you. All our love goes to you.'' West Texas news: May 30, 1996 Death notices TODAY FORT STOCKTON - Valentin V.
