ROBERT MELVILLE FINKS Dr. Robert Melville Finks, 92, passed away at 3:41 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, in Columbia Medical Center. Dr. Finks was born May 7, 1904, in Pulaski, Va., and graduated from VPI in 1925. He graduated from Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1930 and married Mary Elizabeth Huffman of Fort Worth on June 25, 1930. Dr. Finks did postgraduate training in pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., and at the Willard Parker Hospital for Contagious Diseases in New York City. He was a resident pediatrician at the Louisville General Hospital and Medical School in Louisville, Ky., and was a resident pediatrician at the Bradford Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Dr. Finks entered private practice in San Angelo in 1933, and in 1934 became a member of the Rush, Schulkey, Wall and Windham Clinic, later The Clinic Hospital of San Angelo. He served as pediatrician until his retirement in 1975. In 1935, Dr. Finks became a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and remained a life member. He was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in 1938. Dr. Finks held memberships in the American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Texas Pediatrics Society and American College of Allergy, was a charter member and past president of the Tom Green County Medical Society and was a past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He served on the boards of various organizations, including the Tom Green County TBC Association, Planned Parenthood, the City-County Welfare Commission, the advisory board of Baby Clinic, the Tom Green County Polio Commission, the Medical Advisory Board and the Texas Rehabilitation Center in Gonzales, Texas. He also served as a captain in the Medical Corps A.U.S. from 1942 to 1944. He served on the board of trustees at Angelo Community Hospital. Dr. Finks was preceded in death by his brother, Lee Walton Finks Jr.; a sister, Evelyn Finks Hall; and a grandson, Robert Donald Roberson. After attending San Angelo Junior College for one year, she met and married Gordon Gatlin. To this marriage two children were born. Ruth worked at Curry Drug and the ``new'' Warren Drug many years. In 1962, she met and married the love of her life, Tom Bennett. They were married 33 years before he died Feb. 8, 1996. After meeting Tom, they lived in Tulsa, Okla., Little Rock, Ark., Irving, Lubbock and Houston. Before retiring to Navasota, Texas, she had risen to national sales manager for Van Cleef and Arpil fragrances. They had many special and dear friends and many happy remembrances of their years in Navasota. They moved to San Angelo in 1994 to be near their family. She is survived by her daughter, Leigh Ann Spraggins and husband, Bill; and her son, Tommy Gatlin and wife, Mary. ROBERT D. `BOB' HAYS JR. Robert D. ``Bob'' Hays Jr., 45, of San Angelo died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, in his home following a brief illness. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Johnson's Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Robinett, pastor of the First Christian Church of Coleman, officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery in Brady. Estimated time of graveside service is 4:30 p.m. Bob was born Nov. 21, 1951, to Robert and Mary Hays in Brady. He graduated from Brady High School in 1970, and later attended South Plains Junior College. He married Rita Adams in 1972, in Wellman, Texas. She preceded him in death in 1985. Bob was a San Angelo resident for 25 years. He was operations manager and secretary of the corporation of Concho Supply Inc., which he was employed by for 23 years. Bob was a member of the Christian Church. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 12, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Survivors include his daughter, Shelly Charmaine Hays, and one son, Robert Aaron Hays, both of the home; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert D. Hays of Brady; three sisters, Susan Robinson and her husband, Todd, Marisha Chavers and her husband, Tony, all of Fairhope, Ala., and Elisha Schumann and her husband, Leslie, of Doole, Texas; one niece and four nephews, Ian Robinson, Courtney and Andrew Chaver and Riley and Will Schumann; and his very dear friend, Donna Clifton. DORIS ANN RECTOR Doris Ann Rector of San Angelo died early Friday, Jan. 10, 1997, in Shannon Medical Center after a brief illness. Burial will follow in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in San Angelo. In celebration of Doris' faith, a rosary will be held Sunday evening, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home. Doris was born May 1, 1921, in Roby, Texas, to the late Eli and Maggie Coker. She graduated from Roby High School in 1939. On Nov. 23, 1945, Doris married Joe V. Rector in Sweetwater, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1994. Doris received her licensed vocational nurse certification from the Shannon Nursing School in 1959. She was employed as a nurse at the Angelo Clinic for 14 years and later at GTE Southwest in San Angelo until her retirement in 1990. Doris is survived by one son, Randy J. Rector of San Angelo; a daughter and son-in-law, Ricki and Eric Holt of Dallas; two sisters, Billye Ducote and husband, C.T., of San Angelo and Pansy Lou Hale and husband, Jim, of Roby; a brother, Denziel Coker and wife, Myrle, of Sweetwater; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Poulter and husband, George, of San Angelo. Doris also is survived by three special grandchildren, Jory Rector of San Angelo and Josh and Krystal Pfluger of Dallas, and several nieces and nephews. Doris had many friends throughout the West Texas area, including a special ``son,'' Ronnie Roach of Lago Vista, Texas, and a friend, Doodle Dankworth of San Angelo. JOAQUIN ROMERO SANCHEZ III Joaquin Romero Sanchez III, age 14, entered the Kingdom of God at 6:40 Friday morning, Jan. 10, 1997. Joaquin was born Sept. 20, 1982, in Lubbock. This child of God never met a stranger. He always did everything possible to help others. His sense of humor brightened the lives of anyone he came in contact with, always thinking of others before himself. His dimples and smile would melt anyone's heart. He attended Edison Junior High School where both teachers and peers thought well of him. He is survived by his grandmothers, Adela and Consuelo; his mother, Grace Sanchez Perez and stepfather, Flavio Perez; three sisters, Angelita Solis, Ilda Sanchez and Delilah Sanchez; one brother, Jose Morales Jr.; and his special cousin, Edward Gonzales, as Joaquin referred to him as ``Uncle Bill.'' Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Joaquin will be missed by all who knew him; but always will remain in our hearts. Margaret was born July 12, 1917, in Haughton, La., to Joseph Walker Elston Jr. and Wilhelmina McDade Elston. She attended Louisiana State Normal School, now Northwestern State at Natchitoches, La. She married Kenneth Lawrence Lyons Sr. June 28, 1937. Mrs. Lyons was a life member of the Ruth Sunday school class at the First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Lyons was preceded in death by her husband in August 1989 and a brother, Joseph Walker Elston III. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Vivian Fields and Margaret Fields, both of San Angelo; several cousins, nieces and nephews, including Lavern Johnson, Joe Fields and John Fields, all of San Angelo.
