LOUIE CONOR ALEXANDER Louie Conor Alexander, 76, died Sunday, Jan 26, 1997, after a brief illness. Louie was born on May 4, 1920, in Lometa, Texas, and was the second child of Zora Carter Alexander and Charles Henry Alexander. He moved with his family to San Angelo in 1926. After graduating from San Angelo High School, Louie worked for what was then the Texas State Highway Department Engineers and also for the Corps of Engineers in Midland, Texas, until entering the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in 1942. Louie was stationed on the island of Maui in Hawaii and in Saipan during World War II. While in the Navy, he met Rebecca Kirby in California. They were married in Oxnard, Calif., in November of 1945. After his discharge from the Navy, the couple moved to San Angelo where Louie once again worked for the Highway Department. After a few years in Big Lake and San Angelo, the Alexanders moved to Sterling City, Texas, where they lived for nearly 30 years. After his retirement from the Highway Department, Louie was a partner in A&B Construction Company. In the early '80s, he returned to San Angelo, where he lived until his death. Louie was the prototype ``tall Texan,'' whose friends, neighbors and family will remember his wide smile and long stride. He loved nurturing pecan trees and tomato plants. Catching crappie off the covered dock at Paradise Point on Lake Buchanan was always fun for Louie. He enjoyed visits with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, as well, the most recent being a family Christmas in Spring, Texas. Louie's friendliness, his stories and his ability to elicit chuckles endeared him to everyone he met. On Jan. 3, of this year, Louie and Rebecca's house on Dena Drive was destroyed by fire. Louie never lost his sense of humor throughout the crisis. The care and concern generated by good friends in both San Angelo and Sterling City, after this loss, meant a great deal. Louie died knowing that he was well loved by many old and new friends. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Rebecca; three children and their spouses, Ian and Louise Hailstones of Spring, Lynn and Pietro James of Helena, Mont., and Don and Betsy Alexander of Celina, as well as five grandchildren and a great-grandson. His beloved siblings, Charles Alexander Jr., and wife, Beth, and Iris Lorea Graddy and husband, Kenneth, survive him in addition to special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Louie has donated his body to Texas Tech Medical School. The family requests memorials to the nursing department of Angelo State University as a way of honoring the excellent nursing care he received from ASU nursing graduates while he was a patient at Columbia Medical Center. A memorial service celebrating his life, conducted by his friends and family, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in San Angelo.
