God's garden must be beautiful; He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering. He knew you were in pain. He knew you would never get well Upon this earth again. So He closed your weary eyelids and Whispered, ``Peace be thine.'' He then took you up to heaven With hands gentle and so kind. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone. For part of us went with you The day God called you home. A charter member of the Texas Surveyors' Association, he directed survey teams for Exxon's complex legal-engineering issues, and clearing up of titles for ``vacancies,'' on some of Exxon's largest and most valuable leases. These included the enormously significant Exxon leases on the one million-acre King Ranch and the 450,000-acre Kennedy-East Ranches. He worked for Exxon 40 years. His heavy responsibilities in that company included the critical 30-year period of great growth in the Texas oil industry from 1940 to 1970. From Corpus Christi, he served as the supervising surveyor of the South Texas Division of Humble-Exxon, one of four divisions covering Texas. His territory to the north included the Victoria area, the Austin area north to Williamson, Llano and Mason counties, and the west to Val Verde county and the Pecos River. GEORGIA MAY FULGHUM GESCH Georgia May Fulghum Gesch, 84, died Saturday, March 8, 1997, at Coke County Nursing Home in Robert Lee, Texas. Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Eola, Texas. Graveside service will follow in Belvedere Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Georgia May Fulghum Gesch was born Georgia May Bratton on May 6, 1912, in Kiowa, Kan.; she was the third child of seven (two brothers and four sisters). Her parents, Charles and Minnie Bratton, were farmers all during Georgia's childhood. She attended city schools and graduated from the Eureka Kansas High School in 1930. On May 21, 1930, Georgia married William Henry Fulghum Jr. and moved to Texas to begin her married life. He worked for the railroad at the time and they traveled over much of West Texas; she always remembered this period with nostalgia. Georgia proved to be a faithful wife and a good mother. She showed her courage when she actually ``hopped'' a freight with her young son, Bill, to reunite the family. They eventually settled in California where her husband worked at various jobs for the state and industry. She had five children, all boys, during this period: William, Robert, Donald, David and Danny. She worked hard, including her helping to build several homes and living in unusual homes such as a barn and a dentist office while following her husband to various work sites. In 1945, the family returned to Texas and settled in San Angelo where her in-laws were longtime residents. She became a very active member of the Baptist Church. She was a member first at Park Heights Baptist Church and finally at Immanuel Baptist Church. In January of 1954, William Henry died, leaving the three youngest children at home. Although she had not worked outside the home in her married life, Georgia now took a series of jobs to support the children and herself. Without any training, she managed to find enough employment to support her and the children. She worked in the San Angelo school cafeterias and worked her way up to supervisor. While working outside the home, she retained her active role in church work and emotionally supported her husband's parents and her own father, who had settled in San Angelo by this time. After all but the youngest child had left home, she met an Eola farmer named Ernest Gesch and married him in October of 1966. After moving to his farm, she became a member of his church, the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. Georgia enjoyed living and working on a farm. Ernest and Georgia enjoyed doing many things together; they danced almost every weekend and visited with family and friends. After they retired from active farming, Georgia worked for the San Angelo Independent School District in the cafeteria system. As they aged, they decided they wanted to have more leisure time, but still have an income. They got a position running the local landfill which was open three days a week. The work was easy and they had plenty of time to visit. After this became too much of a burden, they quit and used their time gardening and enjoying life. On March 30, 1993, Georgia had a massive stroke that left her paralyzed on the right side and made speech almost impossible. Since 1993, Ernest and Georgia had been residents of the West Coke County Nursing Home in Robert Lee. Georgia is survived by her husband, Ernest; five sons and their wives, William and Alva Fulghum of San Angelo, Robert and Esta Fulghum of Robert Lee, Donald and Lynda Fulghum of Terrell, Texas, David and Judy Fulghum of Arlington, Va., and Dan and Suzanne Fulghum of Conroe, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Ava Jean Ring of Winona, Kan., Joan Whitaker of Poway, Calif., and Dorothy Madden of Pasadena, Calif. The family wishes to thank Hospice of San Angelo and the doctors and nurses at Shannon Medical Center, Baptist Memorials Dan and Judy Burney and Carolyn E. Decker for the loving care given to our wife, mother, sister and aunt. God looked around his garden And He found an empty place. He then looked down upon this earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. It broke our hearts to lose you; But you did not go alone. For part of us went with you The day God called you home.
