LUCI GADDY BALLINGER - Luci Gaddy, after 85 years of earthly trials and pleasures, departed her home in Ballinger on March 26, 1997, to join her Lord and savior in heaven. Among those now rejoicing at her presence in their immortal midst are her parents, Pony and Anna O'Neal Andrews; her husband, A.L. ``Bill'' Weddle; her five brothers, Joe, Guy, Salty, Red and Oscar; her stepson, Reg; and her beloved canine companion, Flai. Those left to mourn Luci's absence include her husband, W.N. Gaddy of Ballinger; her son, William Weddle and his wife, Star, of Bastrop; her son, Michael Weddle and his wife, Angelina, of El Paso; her six grandchildren, Treva Wimbrow, Andrew Weddle, Jeffery Weddle, Marie Rose, Mary Mosley and Debbie Weddle; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to family members, she will be deeply missed by a host of friends and neighbors, and her devoted poodle, Sam. Mary Lucille was born in Monahans, May 31, 1911. She married A.L. Weddle in 1936, with whom she had two sons and enjoyed family life until his death in 1951. As a young widow, she returned to Texas Tech University where she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education, then, subsequently, continued her career as an elementary schoolteacher in the Grandfalls-Royalty school system. It was there that she met W.N. Gaddy, the Grandfalls-Royalty High School principal, to whom she was wed in 1960. Upon retirement from the public schools, W.N. and Luci moved to Ballinger where they resided since 1972. Luci's life can be defined by her various loves and activities. As an elementary schoolteacher, she was an avid supporter of the PTA. Monthly PTA meetings were attended almost invariably by a majority of her students' parents. Because she made an effort to make the parents feel welcomed and necessary (not to mention the outstanding goodies she always baked for those evenings), they, too, became involved in the PTA. Baking ``goodies'' was a lifelong hobby for Luci. In fact, she was a consummate cook of all ``comfort food,'' forever pleasing the palates of family and friends who ``dropped by'' to feast on such temptations as her delicious chocolate creme pies or, for more special occasions, ``the best dressing'' ever concocted. Vying for top billing with Luci's love of cooking was her fondness for card and domino games. She was once a member of four concurrent bridge groups, and certainly, if bridge tables are a part of heaven, Luci already has located her foursome. Luci devoted a major portion of her life to her husband, W.N., and their shared activities. Together they built a cabin in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Colorado where they passed many happy summers entertaining guests and being entertained by seasonal neighbors who, like they, escaped the heat of more southern climes. It was during those Colorado ``summers'' that Luci befriended young Creed Cates, who will remain forever her very special friend. Luci was a lifelong member of the Baptist church and a member of the First Baptist Church of Ballinger at the time of her death. She was a passionate believer in the power of prayer. It was prayer that sustained her with great strength through her final illness, and it was those prayers and unwavering faith that have now earned her a place near the Master. Luci's family wishes to acknowledge the special care given by Dr. Kim Peck and Vantage Home Health Care personnel. They also extend loving notes of thanks to Sabina and Mike Plies of San Angelo and Sheryl and Paul Warren of Ballinger. Pallbearers will be Darrell Rains, Milton Shelburne, Anthony Lange, Doyle Lange, Richard Lange and Dwaine Lange. Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev.
