Most people have heroes that are professional sports players, movie stars or someone else that is famous. Not me. When someone asks me who my hero is, I proudly tell them that my hero is my Aunt Patsy. When people ask who she is and what is so great about her, I tell them that she is my great-aunt that is just like a second grandmother to me. She is a wonderful person that can brighten anybody's day just by sitting down and talking to her. Whenever I have gone to see her, she always has the biggest smile on her face and she is always ready to sit down and talk. I wonder how she could do that when she hurt so bad inside. She was just about one of the strongest people that I know. I know that if I were in her place, I would have already given up and let it be done. But that was not the way she looked at it at all. She was going to take all that she had left and go as far and as long as she could and God would let her. Whenever I think of my Aunt Patsy, I see the person that wouldn't be fully satisfied unless everyone else was satisfied also. I speak for myself and many, many other people when I say that. I am a better person knowing her than not knowing her. I love my aunt very, very much, and I do not want her to leave all of us here.- Morgan WILLIAM DOYLE SHEETS SHREVEPORT, La. - Mr. W.D. She was born Feb. 9, 1913, in Pecos, Texas, to Dr. William Harris Moore and Virginia Herren Moore. She moved to Fort Stockton with her family in 1917 at the age of 5. Mrs. Noelke attended St. Joseph School there and graduated from Fort Stockton High School in 1928, where she played on the basketball team. She was also a gifted pianist and singer and gave numerous recitals, as well as playing in the high school swing band with such good friends as Jimmy Rooney. Mrs. Noelke attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio before transferring to and graduating from the University of Texas at Austin. As a Longhorn, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta and performed with the university's operetta club. After teaching piano and public school for several years, she married Fred William Jones Jr. of Carrizozo, N.M. They lived many happy years in Fort Stockton, operating the Fred Jones Insurance Agency. Mrs. Noelke was an active member of St. Agnes Parish, playing the organ there for many years. She was the first woman elected to the board of directors of the Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce. She took special pride in the role of the Fort Stockton Pilot Club under her residency when its members led the fund raising for a new shingle roof on the Annie Riggs during the 1950s. In addition, Mrs. Noelke served as the president of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, and was an active supporter and board member of the Fort Stockton Water Carnival. She was also a member of the San Antonio Conservation Society. Mr. Jones passed away very suddenly in March 1963. She subsequently married Montgomery Blackwell ``Sonnie'' Noelke Sr. of Mertzon, Texas, in December 1965. They resided contentedly at their ranch home outside of Mertzon until Mr. Noelke's unexpected death in 1968. She remained there until 1992, when she moved back to Fort Stockton to live with her younger brother, Joseph Elijah Moore, and his lifetime companion, Cruz Quintela. Mrs. Noelke was an enthusiastic traveler, visiting family members and friends regularly throughout Texas and New Mexico, as well as traveling in Mexico, Europe and the Far East. In 1927, she was married to Acie Ray Huddleston and shortly thereafter moved to Iraan, Texas, where they became part of the first oil field families housed in tents in the Yates Oil Field in Pecos County, Texas. Jewell and Acie had three sons, Kenneth (now deceased), Gerald ``Corky'' of Navasota and Billy Pete and wife, Flos, of Houston. Her three sons and three grandchildren attended Texas A&M University. Jewell is survived by sisters, Hope Joiner of Gorman, and Amber Craddock and Hazel Roberts, both of Comanche; and brothers, W.D. Dukes and wife, Ulala, of Hideaway Lake in Tyler and Herman Dukes and wife, Jill, of Sidney. She was preceded in death by her husband, Acie, and by her brother, Lynwood. She established a remarkable career of journalism following the completion of a correspondence course. Jewell was the primary writer for the Iraan news from 1948 to 1963 and served as field correspondent for the Odessa American and the San Angelo Times during this period. She and Acie moved to Comanche, Texas, in 1963. Except for some poetry and an occasional article, she took a holiday from writing until age 65. On March 10, 1977, she began writing a weekly column, ``Wagon Wheels,'' for the Comanche Chief. By age 85, she had written about 1,000 articles, with her last one written on April 8, 1997. Jewell was honored to be named Comanche Woman of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce in 1966. She was a frequent speaker at schools, churches and civic clubs. Jewell had a great interest and wrote extensively on Comanche County history and current events, nature (particularly flowers and birds) and folklore. She was a master gardener and a collector of hats. A fun treat was her recital of all the presidents of the United States and numerous poems, from Shakespeare to ``A Had An Apple.'' Her grandchildren, Mitchell, age 8, and Jordan, age 7, also named the presidents to her great delight. She traveled extensively, covering most of the United States and Canada, Europe, Japan and the Far East. Her last trip was to Big Bend in February 1997, where she enjoyed the rafting trip. We will miss Jewell but forever remember her tremendous contributions to her family, church, community and country. She is memorialized in the Corps of Cadets Plaza at Texas A&M University. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 28, at the Comanche First Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Hall & Sons Funeral Home.
