Warren Air Force Base. He was a 1993 graduate of San Angelo Lake View High School and a 1994 graduate of American Commercial College with top honors nationwide in electronics. He loved electronics, the Air Force and the mountains of Wyoming. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. JAMES MACK HUMPHREYS MARFA - James Mack Humphreys, 83, longtime resident of Marfa, died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, in Memorial Hospital in Midland. He was born in Terlingua Abajo Nov. 24, 1913, to W.B. and Rada Humphreys. After graduation from Marfa High School and the University of Oklahoma, he served 4« years in the armed services during World War II in the field artillery and the Army Air Corps. He spent his last two years of service as private pilot for the commanding general of the sixth service command, attaining the rank of major. Prior to entering the service he worked for Wilson Supply Co. in Shreveport. Mr. Humphreys and his family moved back to Marfa in 1949, where he ranched briefly, then purchased the wholesale distributorship for Chevron Oil Co. Inc. He served as chief appraiser for Presidio County during the early 1980s, then resumed ranching. Mr. Humphreys was active in the First Baptist Church of Marfa, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and music director for many years. He also served on the board of directors and as secretary for Paisano Baptist Assembly Inc. He is survived by Barbara Clark Humphreys, his wife of 55 years; and three children, Dr. James Humphreys of Midland, Carolyn Stevens of Anchorage, Alaska, and Grace Baldridge of Houston. Additional survivors include one sister, Verna Popken of Kerrville; eight grandchildren, Dr. Loyd Humphreys and Earl Humphreys, both of San Antonio, Robert Humphreys and Adrienne Humphreys, both of Dallas, Pfc. She married her beloved husband, Robert Lerch on Dec. 15, 1951, and lived in San Angelo the majority of her life. After raising five children, she graduated salutatorian of her licensed vocational nurse class in 1980. She continued her education and became a registered nurse in 1985. She devoted many years to taking care of babies in Shannon's nursery prior to retiring in August 1996. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Lerch. She is survived by her husband, Robert, daughter, Roselle Hall and husband, Don Hall, son, Fred Lerch and wife, Vickie, and son, Mark Lerch, all of San Angelo; daughter, Kathy Glass and husband, Gary Glass; sister, Dorothy Day and husband, Ray; and four grandsons, Pat Glass, Nick Glass, Zack Glass and Michael Hall. Mickye was a longtime faithful member of First United Methodist Church. Mickye was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Elma Fowler, and her sister, Virginia ``Gin'' Chandler. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Loyd Bell; her daughter and only ``son,'' Gayle and Don Harding; one grandson, Tod Harding; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Kaylie Harding; one brother and sister-in-law, L.A. ``Bud'' and Peggy Fowler; one brother-in-law and sister, Melvin and June Bell; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ken and Dottie Chandler; five nieces, Wanda Young, Judy Chandler, Connie Loring, Sherry Crespin and Lorena Musquiz; one nephew, Stephen Bell; and many special friends and her special sisters in the Lydia Ruth Class at First United Methodist Church. EULA `SUE' BARBER Eula ``Sue'' Barber, 89, of San Angelo died at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 1997, at the Sterling County Nursing Home. She was born Aug. 13, 1907, in Eldorado, Texas. She married Luther T. Barber on Dec. 25, 1925, in Eldorado and was a member of St. Mark Presbyterian Church. She devoted the last 40 years of her life to the game of bridge. She was the person responsible for promoting and directing bridge games in San Angelo until recently. She was very pleased to have the building where San Angeloans play the game she loved bear her name. Sue was preceded in death by her husband, L.T. Barber in 1971; her son, Bobby L. Barber in 1982; and daughter-in-law Ebba Ann Barber in 1995. She attended public school in Waelder and moved to San Angelo, where she lived for 63 years. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, where she was very active as a missionary and served as president for a number of years. She was a faithful member until her health failed. She was a member of Hattipha Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star 129, and Court of Calanthe 84. Buck; and an infant son, but his most devastating loss was his wife of 67 years, Pauline Perner Montgomery. A loss from which he could not recover. Marsh and Penny were friends, lovers and partners from their marriage on Dec. 31, 1929, until her death on April 12, 1996. It is almost impossible to speak of them individually. They loved Crockett County and were both so proud of their heritage. ``We are glad that our parents and their parents before them moved to Ozona so that we might be born and live in Crockett County all our lives.'' Pauline ended her story in the Crockett County History book with that paragraph and they did indeed have a long, wonderful life. ELAINE HENDRY Elaine Hendry of San Antonio passed away Saturday, May 17, 1997. She was born March 8, 1953. She is survived by her mother, Betty Shook Hendry of San Antonio; her sister, Elizabeth Hendry of Aspen, Colo.; her uncle, Melvin Shook of San Antonio and his children. Elaine was the granddaughter of Melvin and Lona Shook, who are now deceased. Elaine was an artist who loved animals and nature. SHIRLEY COMBY MCPHERSON WATONGA, Okla. - Shirley Comby McPherson was born on Oct. 21, 1933, and passed away May 19, 1997, at her home in Highlands Village, Texas, at the age of 63. She owned and operated The Continental House of San Angelo from 1975 to 1988. She was a resident of Highland Village and was a member of the Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church in Flower Mound. She is survived by her husband, Robert E. McPherson, who was employed by M-System Food Stores from 1974 to 1988; one son, Larry McPherson and his wife, LaWanna, of Allen; two daughters, Debra Raymond and her husband, Tim, of Cedar Fall, Iowa, and Diana Gragg and her husband, Alan, of San Antonio; two sisters, Barbara Bixler and Nadine Pearson, both of Watonga; and six grandchildren, Jennifer Ann, Laura Lynn and Christy Marie McPherson, Nicholas James, Tara Renee and Zachary John Raymond. Arrangements are by Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Chester was born in Ballinger on Dec. 5, 1913, and was a lifetime resident. He was one of two children born to Louis and Bertha Spill Afflerbach. He married Kathleen Haverland on Dec. 26, 1939, in Rowena, Texas. He spent most of his career managing and operating Afflerbach's Variety Store, a family owned business established by his father in the early 1900s. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and in his younger years was a member of the Ballinger Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Sons of Hermann Lodge and was a member of Germania Farm Mutual Insurance and served as secretary for more than 52 years, retiring on April 25, 1996. Chester is survived by his wife, Kathleen; one son, Charles Afflerbach and his wife, Elizabeth, and their children, Justin and Neal; three daughters, Dina Stewart, Sharon Diana and her husband, Matt, and their children, Holly and Joe; Eileen Knight and her husband, Ron, and their children, Ronnie and Parker. Chester will be remembered as a giving person who put family and friends before self. He was a loving husband and a tender father and grandfather. TEXIE IONE CALLAHAN WOLLET ROBERT LEE - Texie Ione Callahan Wollet, 92 of Robert Lee passed away Monday, May 19, 1997, in the West Coke County Nursing Home, where she had been a resident 11 days. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, in the Robert Lee Cemetery with the Rev. Kary Rawlings officiating. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home. She was born July 16, 1904, in Bryant, Jay County, Ind., the eldest of nine children to Charles Lewis and Lola Dell Hiestand Callahan. After moving to Oklahoma with her family, Texie met and later married William Boyd ``Bud'' Wollet on Dec. 22, 1920, in Pawhuska, Okla. The family lived in various Shell Oil Co. locations in Oklahoma and Texas, before settling in Healdton, Okla., in 1944. After several years of retirement, they moved in 1980 to Robert Lee to be near family. Texie was a longtime Methodist and a Sunday school teacher for many years, mostly in the children department. She joined the Eastern Star in Wilson, Okla., in 1923, and moved her membership to Healdton about 1936. She was a volunteer in the hospital in Healdton and a Girl Scout leader. Her greatest times were to be with her family, camping, especially at Turner Falls and supplying family and friends with her crocheted dishcloths. She is survived by daughters, Thelma and her husband, George Lomas, of Robert Lee, Zelma Reed of Dublin and Dolores and her husband, Hilmer Goedecke of Chino, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Betty Wollet of Austin; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Virgil Callahan and his wife, Betty, of California; sisters, Naomi Overstreet and Loraine Smith, both of California; and many others who were proud to call her ``Grandmom.'' She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Bud Wollet in 1993, and a son, W.B. ``Bud Jr.'' Wollet in 1974.
