Until her beloved J.O. became ill, the two had never spent a night apart from one another for more than 50 years of marriage. As J.O. was nearing death, he grieved greatly that he had to leave her behind. The McCalebs spent a lifetime serving the Lord. They pastored churches in Texas and New Mexico, and they served as pioneer missionaries in California, where they started seven churches which are now self-sufficient. Even after ``retiring'' to Mayhill, N.M., they drove 29 miles to Pinon across Denny Hill rain, shine or snow every Sunday for 10 years. Though she had no children of her own, she was loved and respected by many nieces and nephews, to whom she was fondly known as Aunt Nell. Mrs. McCaleb earned her bachelor's degree from Daniel Baker College in Brownwood, and received her master's degree from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. Her teaching career spanned 43 years in numerous Texas towns including Wall, Coleman and Bangs, as well as towns in California, to include Corona, Holtville and El Centro. Mrs. McCaleb loved to paint. Many churches in Texas, New Mexico and California are adorned with paintings she had done of the Lord's Supper or Jordan River scenes for the baptistry.
