CARPENTER Roy F. Carpenter, known to many as ``Cap,'' went to be with our Lord on June 24, 1997. He was born March 5, 1912, near Waco. He was a resident of San Angelo for 25 years, after retirement. He was a general machinist by trade, and taught shop and math at LTV Aerospace Corp. in Texas and New Mexico. He was a native of Limestone County, near Waco, where he married his high school sweetheart, Lois Cooper, in 1932. They were married 62 years before Lois also went to be with the Lord. Roy was known to many for his interest in the outdoors and being a history buff. Although he explored the Big Bend area, and many other areas, he had a special fondness for the Guadalupe Mountains. He climbed his first peak while working on the XT Ranch on the border of Texas and New Mexico in the 1920s. He first climbed Guadalupe Peak, the tallest mountain in Texas, in 1954, and it is estimated he has climbed the peak more than 40 times, the last time being only a few months ago at the age of 85. He also topped all of the Texas peaks over 8,000 feet. Besides hiking, climbing, taking pictures and exploring the history of the Southwest, he was a devoted husband, father and an admirer of Pug dogs. He never left home without one. His last Pug, Pecos, passed away only last month, May 21. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 29, in Prairie Hill Cemetery in Prairie Hill, with his son, the Rev. Bob Carpenter, officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Survivors include his son, the Rev. MARGARET ADEL KLAS HILL Margaret Adel Klas Hill went to be with our Lord Jesus on June 27, 1997. Margaret was born Dec. 31, 1918, in the Southmayd community, Grayson County, Texas, to Frederick W. Klas Jr. and Leafy M. Klas. Margaret was a loving, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Southland Baptist Church and until poor health, an active member of Jeann Bates' Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy and a retired dental hygienist. Margaret was married to Milton W. Hill on Sept. 7, 1943, in Santa Rosa, Calif. They resided in California, Alaska and Colorado before coming to San Angelo in June 1984. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, William F. Klas. Survivors include her husband and life's companion, Milton; and sons, the Rev. Milton W. ``Skip'' Hill II and his wife, Opal, of San Angelo, and Frederick L. Hill and his wife, Cathy, of Grover City, Calif. Margaret is also survived by her sisters, Mary L. Braswel of Sherman, Texas, Norma R. Williams of Gainesville, Texas, Anne L. Hefton of Sherman and Patsy M. Savage of Keller, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, whom she loved very much, Milton W. ``Chip'' Hill III and his wife, Jamie, of San Angelo, Rhonda Sue Hill of San Angelo and her fiance, Cory Moore, of Grape Creek, Darin Holsten and his wife, Kelli, and two children of Delaware, Ohio, and Carrie H. Foos and her husband, Steve, and three children of Fort Collins, Colo. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Southland Baptist Church with Dr. Dan Williams and the Rev. SARA HATCH POWELL Sara Hatch Powell celebrated life from Nov. 29, 1944, to June 28, 1997. Sara grew up in Mason, Texas, and graduated from Mason High School in 1963. She graduated from Southwest Texas University and taught in the Lubbock, San Antonio and San Angelo school systems. The years since her marriage to Larry Powell have been shared with her family and a multitude of friends in the Wall and Eola area. Sara was gifted with the unique ability to so easily make cherished friendships and be dearly loved by all that met her. Remembering her for her humor, strength and courage are: her husband, Larry Powell of Wall; a son, Wade Powell, daughter, Kimberely Powell and mother, Ethel Mae Hatch, all of San Angelo; twin, Nancy Miller of Christoval; a special cousin, George Brannies of Mason; numerous nieces and nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Brannies, Dr. and Mrs. Dave Rosberg and family, George Brannies and family; and an abundance of friends were all a special part of her life. Services are pending at Grimes Funeral Chapels. ______________________________________________________________ MAGDALENA SALAZAR BALLINGER - Magdalena Salazar, 93, of Ballinger passed away on Saturday, June 28, 1997. A service for Ms. Salazar will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 30, at Templo Sinai in Ballinger with the Rev. Carolina Hernandez officiating. Burial will follow in the Latin American Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Ms. Salazar was born May 25, 1904, in San Pedro de las Colonias, Coahuila, Mexico. She had been a resident of Ballinger most of her life. Magdalena enjoyed quilting and was always trying to help her church by donating money she made from selling quilts. She had a desire to help those in need and was always willing to give a helping hand. Her kindness and thoughtfulness showed her true Christian character. She is survived by two sisters, Matilde Salazar and Gregoria Prendez of Ballinger; and 12 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Leonor V. Salazar; a sister, Celia Mota; and a very special niece, Consuelo Martinez. SARA HATCH POWELL Sara Hatch Powell celebrated life from Nov. 29, 1944, to June 28, 1997. Sara grew up in Mason, Texas, and graduated from Mason High School in 1963. She graduated from Southwest Texas University and taught in the Lubbock, San Antonio and San Angelo school systems. The years since her marriage to Larry Powell have been shared with her family and a multitude of friends in the Wall and Eola area. Sara was gifted with the unique ability to so easily make cherished friendships and be dearly loved by all that met her. Remembering her for her humor, strength and courage are: her husband, Larry Powell of Wall; a son, Wade Powell, daughter, Kimberley Powell, and mother, Ethel Mae Hatch, all of San Angelo; twin, Nancy Miller of Christoval; a special cousin, George Brannies of Mason; numerous nieces and nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Brannies, Dr. and Mrs. Dave Rosberg and family, George Brannies and family; and an abundance of friends who were all a special part of her life. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 30, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. in Hilda Cemetery near Mason, where she will be beside her father, Jim Hatch of Mason. The family requests that contributions be made to Hospice of San Angelo or a favorite charity. MARGARET ADEL KLAS HILL Margaret Adel Klas Hill went to be with our Lord Jesus on June 27, 1997. Margaret was born Dec. 31, 1918, in the Southmayd community, Grayson County, Texas, to Frederick W. Klas Jr. and Leafy M. Klas. Margaret was a loving, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Southland Baptist Church and, until poor health, an active member of Jeann Bates' Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy and a retired dental hygienist. Margaret was married to Milton W. Hill on Sept. 7, 1943, in Santa Rosa, Calif. They resided in California, Alaska and Colorado before coming to San Angelo in June 1984. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, William F. Klas. Survivors include her husband and life's companion, Milton; and sons, the Rev. Milton W. ``Skip'' Hill II and his wife, Opal, of San Angelo, and Frederick L. Hill and his wife, Cathy, of Grover City, Calif. Margaret is also survived by her sisters, Mary L. Braswel of Sherman, Texas, Norma R. Williams of Gainesville, Texas, Anne L. Hefton of Sherman and Patsy M. Savage of Keller, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, whom she loved very much, Milton W. ``Chip'' Hill III and his wife, Jamie, of San Angelo, Rhonda Sue Hill of San Angelo and her fiance, Cory Moore, of Grape Creek, Darin Holsten and his wife, Kelli, and two children of Delaware, Ohio, and Carrie H. Foos and her husband, Steve, and three children of Fort Collins, Colo. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Southland Baptist Church with Dr. Dan Williams and the Rev. M.W. ``Skip'' Hill II performing the services. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. The family requests that gifts be given to Hospice of San Angelo, Southland Baptist Church or the donor's local church.
