She grew up on the Mesquite Valley Ranch south of San Angelo with her parents, A.G. and Gladys West. She was fortunate enough to live the West Texas ranching lifestyle that has almost vanished, working and playing outdoors and raising sheep, cattle and goats. She enjoyed hunting deer and quail and fishing in the spring-fed creek on the ranch. She had the opportunity to travel around the country with her family to places like New York City, the Grand Canyon, Mexico and Big Bend. She graduated from San Angelo High School and attended San Angelo College (now Angelo State University). From birth she was part of the fellowship of Park Heights Baptist Church. Music was a large part of her life; she played piano by ear and learned the saxophone. She lent her soprano voice to solos, and especially loved spirituals and gospel songs. As a young woman, Sue worked for General Telephone Co. and as a dental assistant in San Angelo. In 1958, she married Carl Leroy Hobson, a surveyor for Shell Oil Co. As his job required, they moved from town to town, making friends in such places as Albuquerque, N.M., Richfield, Utah, and Salt Lake City. She devoted her time to raising their two daughters and creating a safe and happy home for her family wherever they lived. She enjoyed sewing clothes and costumes for her daughters. Wherever the family moved, she was active in the Southern Baptist church, often playing piano for worship services. After the death of her husband in 1975, Sue returned to San Angelo to live. She resumed her membership at Park Heights Baptist Church, and faithfully supported the church with her money and time. She worked for 17 years in the church nursery, pouring her love and energy into the children of the church, especially the infants. She sang in the sanctuary choir, and played the piano for her Sunday school class, the Senior Singles. In her later years, she cared for her aging parents in her home. Her father died in 1989, and she continued caring for her handicapped mother until the end. For years she observed a daily quiet time, reading her Bible over and over, and praying for the Southern Baptist missionaries around the world. She enjoyed social activities and trips taken with the Senior Singles. She enjoyed her home and yard, and was proud of the ornamental pond she built and filled with water lilies. She was a beautiful and special girl and woman, and will be greatly missed by all whom she loved. She leaves behind her mother, Gladys West; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Mike Contreras; daughter and son-in-law, Angie and Donald Stripe; aunt, Eula Townsend; uncle and aunt, J.D. and Melba Lock; aunt, Claire Lock; and sisters-in-law, Lelia Martin and Ruby Horak.
