Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Rohlfs and Ed Wandling officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Gladys was born July 25, 1915, in Fairview, Texas, to Maude and Curtis Byrd. She attended school in Fairview and graduated from San Angelo High School in 1934. Gladys went on to San Angelo College and graduated in 1937. Gladys was married to John Robert McClure on May 28, 1938, and they finished their education together at the University of Texas, graduating in 1940. She worked for the Boy Scouts of America office during World War II. She was associated with the McClure's Bakery from 1946 to 1955 at 1502 W. Beauregard. Gladys began her teaching career at Arden in 1937 and returned to teaching in San Angelo in 1960 as a third-grade teacher at Santa Rita Elementary School. She retired from teaching in 1977. She was a beloved teacher and friend whose warmth and wit touched all those around her. Gladys was a lifelong Methodist and a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a United Methodist Women member and one-time member of the Ruth Class. She was a lifetime member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Conrad and Pam McClure of Grape Creek; her daughter, Sylvia McClure of Houston; grandson and wife, Bryan and Kathy McClure; great-grandchild, Jessica McClure; a granddaughter, Shawna McClure; a sister, Mignon McClure; sister-in-law, Jeanette McKinley; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Frances and Lewis West; a brother-in-law, Myrph Havins; and numerous other nephews and nieces. FRANK EDWIN SAUZE MIDLAND - Services for longtime resident of Midland, Frank E. Sauze, 95, will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, with the Rev. Larry Hood, pastor of the Chisholm Baptist Church of Rockwall, officiating, and the Rev. John Rech of the First United Methodist Church of Midland assisting. Masonic graveside service will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. Mr. Sauze passed away on Saturday, July 12, 1997, at his home. Mr. Sauze was born May 4, 1902, in Walla Walla, Wash. He was a supervisor with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., retiring after 42 years of service. The company transferred him to Sweetwater, Vernon, Fort Worth, Abilene, Odessa and Midland in his tenure with the telephone company. He was married to his beloved wife, Noodie Mae, for 57 years. She preceded him in death in 1985. He and his family were members of the First United Methodist Church. He was a Past Master of Abilene Masonic Lodge No. 559 AF&AM in Abilene and a dual member in Midland Lodge NO. 623 AF&AM. He served at the head of many Masonic bodies, receiving the Knight York Cross of Honor and Knight Grand Cross of the Grand Encampment, Knights Templar of the United States of America and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was Past Patron of Norman Read Chapter No. 1010, Order of the Eastern Star. He held a life certificate in the Masonic Lodge and had received a membership pin of 65 years. Survivors include twin daughters, Jean Sauze of Midland and June Sauze Dunkin of San Angelo; three grandchildren, Evelynn Braden and husband, Randy, of Rankin, Texas, Cindy Hood and husband, Larry, of Rockwall, Texas, and Steven Dunkin and wife, Stacey, of Weatherford; and four great-grandchildren, James Braden, Aaron Braden, Nathan Braden and Blair Dunkin. ROBERT DALE CASTLEBERRY Robert Dale Castleberry, born Aug. 18, 1923, in Liberty Hill, passed from this world at 7:25 a.m. Monday, July 14, 1997, after a long and brave struggle. He has left us with a legacy of his wife of 53 years, Birdie Castleberry; two daughters, Beverly Shaw and her husband, Ronny, of San Angelo, and Rene Castleberry of Dallas; two grandsons, David Cline of San Angelo and Scott Cline and his wife, Cheryl, of Irving; four great-grandchildren, Ashley, Savannah, Kelsey and Andrew; and many, many wonderful family and friends. Bob served our country in both World War II and the Korean War. He worked as a boot maker for M.L. Leddy and Sons for 50 years. His craft was made with great love and skill, and is with many of us today. Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Johnson's Funeral Home with burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Jewel was born June 21, 1904, in Lampasas County. She married Norman G. Hodges Dec. 5, 1921. They moved to Schleicher County in 1925, where they remained residents until their demise. Jewel was a special lady that loved her God, family and friends and was loved by all that knew her. Norris, 76, of San Angelo died at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, July 13, 1997, in Columbia Medical Center of San Angelo. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. G.W. was born March 29, 1921, in Talpa and was a resident of San Angelo for 47 years. He was the owner of Model Radio and TV, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Belmore Baptist Church. G.W. was married to Juanita Odell on May 27, 1939, in Ballinger. She preceded him in death on Aug. 2, 1990. He married Dorres Stavinoha Koontz on Nov. 9, 1991, in San Angelo. Survivors include his wife, Dorres Norris of San Angelo; his sister, Frances Raymer of San Angelo; one daughter, Marcia Hurst and husband, Wade, of Plano; one son, Wiley Dell Norris and wife, Paula, of Guy, Ark.; two grandchildren, Randy Moore of Conway, Ark., and Angie Frecica and husband, Daniel, of Honey Grove; and two great-grandchildren, Lance and Ethan. LOIS MYRTLE CROUCH Lois Myrtle Crouch, 92, of San Angelo died at 10 p.m. Friday, July 11, 1997, at her residence. Myrtle was born Dec. 31, 1904, in Barclay and was a resident of this area for 91 years. She was a homemaker and a Methodist. Myrtle was married to R.S. Crouch on April 9, 1927, in San Angelo. He preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by her son, Ralph Junior Crouch. Survivors include one daughter, Gloria Crouch Whitley and husband, Cloice, of Harlingen; one daughter-in-law, Betty Crouch of Wall; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kenneth, Jerry and Karolyn Crouch, all of Wall, Terri Whitley Hoelscher and Todd Whitley, both of Austin, and Jill Whitley Sheehan of Fort Worth; and six great-grandchildren. Fowler, 46, of Paint Rock, died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 1997, at his residence. Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, at the First Baptist Church in Paint Rock with the Rev. Mr. Fowler was born Sept. 29, 1950, in Ballinger to Robert W. Fowler and Mae Bell Pierce. After graduating from high school, he moved to Fort Worth where he attended college. Mr. Fowler worked for Fort Worth National Bank for nine years. He then moved back to Paint Rock where he started his own metal construction business. He worked as a welder. Mr. Fowler served as constable for Precinct 1 in Concho County for many years. Survivors include his parents, Robert W. Fowler and Mae Bell Pierce Fowler of Paint Rock; one brother, Gary Fowler of Paint Rock; and two nieces, Nellie Fowler and Julie Fowler, both of Paint Rock. The family requests memorials may be made to a favorite charity. JAMES THUREL SCRUGGS James Thurel Scruggs of San Angelo died Monday, July 14, 1997, at his residence. Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. James Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. He was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Beebe, Ark., to Freeman P. and Mary Ruth Scruggs. He was the second of nine children. The family moved to Alabama in 1928, where he attended Gunterville High School until he was drafted in 1943. He met and married Ruth Vernell Carroll in 1950, in San Angelo. He retired from the U.S. Air Force, after serving 27 years for his country in India, Burma, Africa, Taiwan, Thailand and Alaska. James worked for GTE for six years and attended Park Heights Baptist Church. He was a member of the Nixon Chapel in Alabama, the RSVP, Concho Valley Food Bank, the local chapter of AARP and the Telephone Pioneers Club. He was a past member of the American Legion. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Ruth Vernell Carroll Scruggs; one son, Robbie Scruggs, daughter-in-law, Vivian, and grandsons, Jarret and Hunter, all of Carrollton; two daughters, Ruth Wheeler, son-in-law, Mike, and granddaughter, Kami, all of San Angelo, and Regina Ross, son-in-law, Oren, granddaughter, Crystal, and grandson, Christopher, all of Hurst. He also is survived by three sisters, Betty West, Linda Garrison and Verna Cryer; three brothers, Deward Scruggs, Arvile Lee Scruggs and Donald Scruggs, and their spouses, all of Alabama; a sister-in-law, Ann Culberth of Huntsville; and several nieces and nephews. CLAYTON JEFF `RED' JOHNSON Col. Clayton Jeff ``Red'' Johnson, 76, of Veribest died Monday, July 14, 1997, in a local hospital. Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with full military graveside honors to follow in Mullins Cemetery. Col. Johnson was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Moody, Texas. He married Linda Waldinger on Sept. 3, 1981, in Ruidoso, N.M. Col. Johnson graduated from San Angelo High School, San Angelo College and Angelo State University. He also attended Southern Methodist University on a full scholastic and athletic scholarship, leaving SMU to join the Army-Air Corps. He started his 32 years of distinguished military service as a B-17 combat pilot. He flew 51 bombing missions in the European Theatre and later fought in Korea and Vietnam. He received the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster. He spent 20 years in transportation and was Commander of MAC's largest and busiest aerial port at the time of his retirement. Survivors include his loving wife, Linda Johnson; five daughters, Linda Dressen and her husband, Russell, of Abilene, Carol Eleyet and her husband, Gordon Chase, of San Diego, Peggy Robinson of Grapevine, Lorrie Taylor and her husband, Burnie, of Sutter, Calif., and Gretchen Staha and her husband, Pat, of San Angelo; one son, Leo Waldinger and his wife, Lisa, of Godley, Texas; one brother, Cecil Johnson of San Angelo; one sister, Clydia Prosise of San Angelo; eight grandchildren; and many loving friends. Otis Stegall ROBERT LEE - Otis Leonard Stegall, 73, of Robert Lee died Monday, July 14, 1997, in a San Angelo hospital. Masonic graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Robert Lee Cemetery. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home. He was born June 17, 1924, in Grandfield, Okla., and had been a longtime resident of Robert Lee. A Marine veteran, he was an electrician and a Baptist. Clifford Beesley LLANO - Clifford Beesley, 80, died Monday, July 14, 1997, in Llano. He was born Dec. 12, 1916, in Mason County and had been a longtime resident of Llano. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a rancher and a member of the Church of Christ and the American Legion. He retired from the U.S. Air Force, after serving 27 years for his country in India, Burma, Africa, Taiwan, Thailand and Alaska. James worked for GTE for six years and attended Park Heights Baptist Church. He was a member of the Nixon Chapel in Alabama, the RSVP, Concho Valley Food Bank, the local chapter of AARP and the Telephone Pioneers Club. He was a past member of the American Legion. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Ruth Vernell Carroll Scruggs; one son, Robbie Scruggs, daughter-in-law, Vivian, and grandsons, Jarret and Hunter, all of Carrollton; two daughters, Ruth Wheeler, son-in-law, Mike, and granddaughter, Kami, all of San Angelo, and Regina Ross, son-in-law, Oren, granddaughter, Crystal, and grandson, Christopher, all of Hurst. She was the oldest of 11 children born to Henry and Lilly Turn. Pauline helped raise her brothers and sisters, giving each the loving care and devotion she felt her Lord wished her to offer. Pauline and Guy had one son, Guy H. Prater, born Oct. 21, 1930. Pauline married Boyce A. ``Tex'' Livingston on Aug. 7, 1952, in Pocatello, Idaho. They had both retired and Pauline was in a rest home (Silver Leaves) in Garland, Texas. Boyce and Pauline were married for 45 years. She will be sorely missed by all who survive her. They moved to San Angelo from Marshall, Texas, in 1972, when he was named president of Monarch Tile. When retired, he volunteered to work for International Executive Service Corps and his assignments took them to Juarez, Mexico, Singapore and Libson, Portugal. Alma served on Session of St. Mark's Presbyterian Church and was co-chairman of fund-raising with Billy Willig on a major building expansion project. She was active in Newtimers and chairman of bridge and Knitwits, serving two terms as president. She served on the board of the entertainment series and supported the work in dramatic arts at Angelo State University. Alma and Edward belonged to Terps Dance Club and served on the board. She was active in RSVP since it was organized. She also organized two investment clubs in Cincinnati and Marshall. She played the piano and organ at churches in Bronte and San Angelo. Music and her students were a great joy of her life. She taught music in Bronte and San Angelo for many years. Every one of her students have become accomplished musicians. Irene and her husband, Walter, also were stock farmers in Coke County for many years. Irene is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stan and Shirley Phillips of Austin; daughter-in-law, Jan Phillips of Jersey Village; a sister, Lillian Robbins and husband, Carroll, of Bronte; a brother, Norman Kiker of Bronte; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. JAN RUTH WATERS HOUSER Jan Ruth Waters Houser died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, in Idlewild, N.M. She was born Jan. 16, 1936, in Canadian, Texas, to John P. Walters and Jennie Ruthledge Waters. Jan attended Canadian High School and graduated from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, with a bachelor's degree in music. She attended the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Mich., a branch of the University of Michigan, studying piano and harp. She taught piano and harp for many years in Amarillo, Texas, Roswell, N.M., and Corpus Christi, Texas. She played the harp in the Amarillo symphony, Roswell symphony and a short time with the Corpus Christi symphony before moving to San Angelo three years ago. Jan was the organist for the Idlewild Community Church for many years during the summertime, and served on the Idlewild board of directors. She was an active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, and the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in San Angelo, after moving here. She participated in the choir and the St. Catherine's Guild. BRALLEY San Angelo has lost a longtime, dedicated civic leader when Sandra R. Bralley passed away on Friday morning, July 18, 1997, in Columbia Medical Center. Sandra was involved in numerous civic projects in San Angelo for 40 years. She was past president of the Community Hospital Auxiliary, past president of the ABWA Local Chapter, past president of the Goodfellow Air Force Base Officers' Wives Club, past president of the Council on Alcoholism, chairperson of Recruitment Committee at Columbia Medical Center, co-chairperson of San Angelo Council of Hospital Auxiliaries, past member of the San Angelo Convention and Visitors Bureau, past member of the San Angelo Board of Realtors, past chairperson of the San Angelo River Corridor Committee, current member of the State Board of Hospital Auxiliaries, and was involved with many other city and state civic projects. Sandra was the past co-owner of Air, Land & Sea Travel Agency in San Angelo. She was formerly married to Maj. Charles McDevitt, retired, and is survived by two daughters, Virginia Shirato of Springfield, Mo., and Maureen McDevitt of Evergreen, Colo.; and son, Michael McDevitt of Austin. She had three grandchildren, Nicole Shirato, Gianina Shirato and J. Christopher Shirato. Sandra was preceded in death by her second husband, Master Sgt. Harold Bralley. Scudday BIG SPRING - D.E. ``Coots'' Scudday, 76, died Saturday, July 19, 1997, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Mount Olive Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. He was born Jan. 21, 1921, in Brownfield and had been a resident of the Big Spring area since 1930. He worked for Sun Oil Co. for more than 40 years and served in the Coast Guard. He was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge 1386 and the American Legion. Survivors include four nieces, Ginny Dee Mathews of Eastland, Connie Gardner of San Antonio, Yvette Jiles of Big Spring and Kerney Sue Merrill of Arlington; and a nephew, Mike Scudday of San Antonio. Burgess Merrifield SWEETWATER - Burgess Merrifield, 16, of Fort Worth died Saturday, July 19, 1997, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fort Worth. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. in Albany Cemetery in Albany. Arrangements are by McCoy Funeral Home. He was born March 26, 1981, in Little Rock, Ark. He was a student at Crowley High School and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Boy Scouts. Survivors include his parents, John and Skylar Merrifield, a sister, Matilda Merrifield, and two brothers, Will Merrifield and John Merrifield Jr., all of Fort Worth; his maternal grandmother, Matilda Nail Peeler of Fort Worth; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Arthur of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Dr. T.D. Young SWEETWATER - Dr. T.D. Young, 86, of Abilene died Saturday, July 19, 1997, at his residence. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Garden of Memories with a memorial service at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by McCoy Funeral Home. He was born Sept. 19, 1910, in Roscoe and had been a longtime resident of Abilene, Roscoe and Sweetwater where was a medical doctor. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Sheila Kay Fox and Diane Huddleston, both of Austin; a sister, Jane Childers of Abilene; and four grandchildren. Clifford Martin BIG LAKE - Clifford Eugene Martin, 63, of Barnhart died Saturday, July 19, 1997, in a San Angelo hospital. Services are pending at Richard W. Box Funeral Home.
