She was born Sept. 28, 1911, in Cat Spring and after living in various cities had moved recently to Sonora. She was a Methodist and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Ernest Johnson BRADY - Ernest Theodore Johnson, 96, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997, in a local nursing home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Leatherwood Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. He was born Feb. 10, 1901, in East Sweden and was a lifelong resident of the area. He had been a barber for 59 years and had owned and operated Johnson & Mitchell Barber Shop. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger with the Rev. Taylor Henley and Dr. Jerold McBride officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mrs. Dow was born June 19, 1911, in Coleman. She lived most of her childhood in Ballinger, where she graduated from Ballinger Senior High School in 1929. She graduated from Baylor School of Nursing in 1932, and later graduated from Baylor School of Anesthesia in 1944. She moved to San Angelo in 1951, where she practiced anesthesia at the clinic, Shannon and St. John Hospitals. Before her retirement she was director of nursing at Baptist Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her sister Dr. Elizabeth Truly of San Angelo; a son, Jerry Dow and wife, Annette, of Austin; three grandsons, Gregory Dow of Houston, Matthew Dow and Luke Dow, both of Austin. All three of her grandsons are practicing attorneys. She has four great-grandchildren, Clara and Emily Dow of Austin and Collin and Zachary Dow of Houston. Marguerite was loved by family and friends who all saw in her a person who loved unconditionally. SAMMIE ANN FARMER GARNER HOUSTON - Sammie Ann Farmer Garner passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at Bellaire General Hospital. She was born Aug. 4, 1932, in Eola, Texas. She was the daughter of Sam F. Farmer and Virginia L. Farmer. Both preceded her in death. Sammie Ann's journey brought her to live in San Angelo, Abilene, Midland, Oklahoma City, and eventually to Houston in 1967 where she lived the remainder of her life. Sammie Ann was a devoted wife and mother. In her later years, her grandchildren were her greatest pleasure. Her warmth and helping hand will be missed by all. She was loved by everyone close to her. She is survived by her husband, Robert Dale Garner of Houston; sons, Sam F. Hensley Garner and wife, Deborah, and Curtis Lee Hensley, both of Houston; grandchildren, Laura Ann, Dale Allen, Trace Warne, Ashley Mae and Lily Elizabeth. Interment will follow in Eola Cemetery in Eola. Arrangements are by Earthman Funeral Directors. EVELYN GREGG HAGELSTEIN Evelyn Gregg Hagelstein, 75, died Aug. 13, 1997. Evelyn was born Aug. 26, 1921, in San Saba County. She moved to San Angelo by covered wagon from San Saba County with her family in the fall of 1923. Evelyn attended school in San Angelo, graduating from San Angelo High School in 1939. She attended Tarleton, graduating in 1941. She began her teaching career in 1942 in the Grape Creek area. After receiving her degree from North Texas State Teachers College in 1945, she taught at Santa Rita, Reagan and Alta Loma. In 1977, Evelyn was named Elementary Teacher of the Year by the San Angelo Classroom Teachers. While teaching at Reagan, she met Hans Hagelstein. They were married on Aug. 15, 1948. They had been married 43 years when Hans passed away on Dec. 1, 1991. Evelyn was a charter member of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church and a founding member of the Mary Martha Sunday School Class. She was active in the United Methodist Women, serving in several official capacities. After her retirement in August 1981, she completed a hand-made quilt for each of her grandchildren. She was also director of Mothers Morning Out and active in Fun Fest at Sierra Vista. She was instrumental in organizing a quilting group at Sierra Vista. Evelyn also was preceded in death by her brothers, Neal, Everett and Henry Gregg; and sisters, Verna and Bernice Gregg. She is survived by two sons, Gregg and his wife, Kristin, of Odessa and Bryan and his wife, Debbie, of San Angelo; and one daughter, Eva of San Angelo. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Jill, John and Justin Hagelstein of San Angelo and Riley and Andrew Hagelstein of Odessa; two stepgrandchildren, Carla Collinsworth of Odessa and Neil Collinsworth of Austin; and two step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers and their wives, Tom Sr., Jack and James Gregg, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was a homemaker and a member of the Zoar United Church of Christ in Rowena and had worked at Zentners Cafe in Rowena for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, on Aug. 25, 1943, and by one brother, one sister and two sons-in-laws. Clara is survived by her son, Joe Pfluger of San Angelo, and her daughters, Katie Priem of San Angelo and Edleen Buxkemper of Rowena. Gabe Coleman, born March 1. 1918, in Paris, Texas, died in San Angelo on Friday, Aug. 15, 1997, at his residence. Dr. Coleman is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Alford Coleman; sons, Robert Coleman and wife, Kay, of Midland and Tom Coleman and wife, Lynne, of Dallas; one daughter, Mary Maude Tabor and husband, Mike, of Dallas; seven grandchildren, Gabe and Caroline Coleman, Preston Reeder of Midland, Benson and Gabe T. Coleman of Dallas, David Tabor of Dallas and Elizabeth Tabor of Nashville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by a brother, George Robert Coleman Jr., and parents, Mary Thornhill Coleman and George Robert Coleman. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His caring presence will be missed by his family, many friends and former patients. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1935, and the University of Texas at Austin in 1939. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Texas Medical School in 1945. After completing his internship in Indianapolis, Indiana, and his residency in Iowa City, Iowa, he and his family moved to San Angelo in 1949, to begin his practice. His life was an example of service to others. He served at Shannon Hospital as chief of the department of medicine, on the board of Rio Concho Manor, RSVP, Southwest Bank, the board of community development, Meals for the Elderly and as a trustee for First United Methodist Church of San Angelo. From 1957 to 1959, he served as a major in the Army at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and was recertified in 1976. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, past president of the Tom Green 8 County Medical Society, and District Governor of the Texas Academy of Internal Medicine and the Texas Society of Internal Medicine. He was a member of the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the Texas Internist Club. He retired in 1983. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo, officiated by the Rev. Carl Rohlfs. In 1949, they moved to San Angelo, where he remained the rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church for 25 years. He preceded her in death May 8, 1984. During the 1960's, Margaret Ann was the librarian at Edison, where she shared her love of literature, music and nature with those around her. Her thirst for knowledge continued until her death. Words fail when those who knew her attempt to define how Margaret Ann touched their lives. She was gracious, compassionate and giving. We will cherish her memory forever. His caring presence will be missed by his family, many friends and former patients. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1935, and the University of Texas at Austin in 1939. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Texas Medical School in 1945. After completing his internship in Indianapolis, Indiana, and his residency in Iowa City, Iowa, he and his family moved to San Angelo in 1949, to begin his practice. His life was an example of service to others. He served at Shannon Hospital as chief of the department of medicine, on the board of Rio Concho Manor, RSVP, Southwest Bank, the board of community development, Meals for the Elderly and as a trustee for First United Methodist Church of San Angelo. From 1957 to 1959, he served as a major in the Army at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and was recertified in 1976. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, past president of the Tom Green 8 County Medical Society, and District Governor of the Texas Academy of Internal Medicine and the Texas Society of Internal Medicine. He was a member of the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the Texas Internist Club. He retired in 1983. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the First United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Carl Rohlfs, the Rev. John Elford and the Rev. Grosse Mohler. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Joe was born Sept. 24, 1910, in Sulphur Springs, Texas. He married Fern Hogan in 1932, in Decatur, Texas. Joe owned and operated Mission Funeral Home in Menard, Texas, for 10 years before moving to San Angelo in 1959. He opened Home Hardware and operated it until he retired in 1971. Joe was a past Mason and a member of the Rotary Club, having been past district governor of Rotary International in 1969 and 1970. He received the Rotarian of the Year Award for 1973-74, the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 1980, and in 1996 he received the Golden Rotary Award for 50 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Fern Aycock of San Angelo; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Rita Aycock of San Angelo; two grandchildren, Mark Aycock and wife, Kathy, of Menard and Kelli Jimenez and husband, Ray, of Harlingen; two stepgrandchildren, Bryan Lasswell and wife, M'Linda, of Galveston and Sharla Fitzgerald and husband, Reid, of Frisco; and seven great-grandchildren, Kaci and Kari Aycock, Alyssa and Marissa Jimenez, Robert and Patrick Fitzgerald and Reese Lasswell. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Friendship Sunday School Class. The family requests that any memorials be made to the building fund at the First United Methodist Church.
