Marie was born to Marcus and Carrie Mills Grimes in Troy, Texas, on Aug. 10, 1902. She married Harvey E. Hays in Ballinger, Texas, on May 20, 1993. He preceded her in death on April 16, 1948, following valiant service in both world wars. Following the death of her husband, Marie entered college and received an associate arts degree from San Angelo College and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin in June 1952. Marie taught school both before and after receiving her degree in several school systems including Buffalo Gap, Wingate in the early 1920s, a rural school in Borden County, and then at Reagan Elementary School in San Angelo from 1952 until her retirement in 1968. She considered her students as her own children. She was active in several national and local organizations including the American Association of University Women, the Retired Teachers Association, Friends of the Library, Project Dignidad, and the Literary Council where she taught. Marie was an ardent student of the Bible and as a founding member of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church taught Sunday school into her 90s. Marie is survived by her three daughters, Virginia Edgar and Bill, Nita Smith and husband, Hobby, all of San Angelo, along with Jean McManus and husband, Jim, of Red Springs, N.C. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, who were the light of her life, 13 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Additional survivors are two sisters, Marian Asberry and Ruth Burnett, both of San Angelo. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Cecil Lee Grimes, on April 1, 1925. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church with the Rev. Linda Elford officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Mary Martha Sunday School Class. The family extends a special thanks to Columbia Home Health Care, Family Hospice and the staff at Rio Concho East for their tender loving care and support of Marie in her final days. LOLA DAVIS CRAIG Lola Davis Craig passed away from this earth at 9:35 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997, on a journey to join her loved ones in eternity. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, in Eldorado Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Lola was born on May 8, 1913, to Ed and Annie Davis in Eldorado, Texas, where she lived most of her life. She met and married her husband of 54 years, Elvis Craig, on March 24, 1932. Lola spent her married life as a homemaker, a helpmate to her husband, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. She and Elvis spent the last 20 years in San Angelo. Lola was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, a very special sister, Mary Davis, and two grandsons, Jimmy Weldon Craig and Elvis Paul Phillips. Survivors include one daughter, Marianne Phillips and her husband, John, of San Angelo; one son, Weldon Craig and his wife, Carolyn, of Hobbs, N.M.; five grandchildren, Doug Phillips and his wife, Cindy, of San Angelo, Loann Baker and her husband, Daniel, of San Angelo, Debbie Davis and her husband, Darrell, of California, Scott Craig and his wife, Venee, of Casper, Wyo., and Larnell Camus and her husband, Mike, of Austin. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren to who Lola was simply called ``Great'', Carrie and Jennifer Davis, Amanda and Matt Phillips, Joshua, Jessica and John David Baker, Heather and Megan Camus, and Jackson Craig. ELIZABETH JONES McCREA COLEMAN - Elizabeth Jones McCrea, 94, of San Angelo and formerly of Coleman, died Wednesday evening at Heritage Oaks Nursing Home in Ballinger. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at the First Presbyterian Church in Coleman with the Rev. Jeff Robinett officiating. Private family interment will be held in Coleman Cemetery prior to the memorial service. Arrangements are by Stevens Funeral Home. Elizabeth Jones McCrea was born Jan. 15, 1903, in Talpa, Texas, the daughter of the late Edwin Maryland Jones and Mattie Zivley Jones. She grew up in the Talpa area and graduated from Ballinger High School. She also graduated from Daniel Baker College in Brownwood and was a school teacher. She was the widow of Marshall McCrea, who died May 8, 1963. She lived for several years in Coleman, later moving to Tyler and Lubbock. She had lived in San Angelo since 1979. For many years she was active in PEO; a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in San Angelo where she served as an elder. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Marshall S. McCrea Jr. and wife, Dianne, of Llano and George E. McCrea and wife, Jane, of San Angelo; one sister, Ellen Townsend of Coleman; five grandchildren, Melissa Nunlee and husband, Greg, of Dallas, Beth Mayer of San Angelo, Mackie McCrea and wife, Denise, of Dallas, Michael McCrea and wife, Tracy, of Fredericksburg and Winn McCrea of Austin; and nine great-grandchildren, Nick, Emily, Marshall, Courtney, Caleb, Campbell, Annie, George and Edwin. VALARIE FAY HARRISS AULMANN Valarie Fay Harriss Aulmann, 25, of San Angelo died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997, in a Fort Worth hospital after a lengthy battle with leukemia. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, in Chadbourne North Church of Christ with Frank Berthold officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mrs. Aulmann was born April 6, 1972, in Carroll, Mich., and had lived in San Angelo for four years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. Memorials may be sent to the Leukemia Society of America. TYRONE LEE ALLEN Tyrone Lee Allen was born March 16, 1981, in Greenville and had been a resident of San Angelo since 1983. He was a student at Lake View High School. Tyrone was active in JROTC and also participated on the football and track teams, played basketball and the drums as a member of the school band. Tyrone was a member of Alexander Temple Church of God in Christ where he was an active choir member and drummer. What people will remember most about Tyrone is his smile and his ability to bring out the best in others. He is survived by his parents, the Rev. PRINCE JR. Joseph Francis Prince Jr., 44, of San Angelo passed away Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997, in a local hospital. Services are pending at Heritage Funeral Home. ______________________________________________________________ MARIE HAYS Marie Hays went to be with her Lord on Aug. 20, 1997, at Rio Concho East in San Angelo, Texas. Marie was born to Marcus and Carrie Mills Grimes in Troy, Texas, on Aug. 10, 1902. She married Harvey E. Hays in Ballinger, Texas, on May 20, 1923. He preceded her in death on April 16, 1948, following valiant service in both world wars. Following the death of her husband, Marie entered college and received an associate arts degree from San Angelo College and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin in June 1952. Marie taught school both before and after receiving her degree in several school systems including Buffalo Gap, Wingate in the early 1920s, a rural school in Borden County, and then at Reagan Elementary School in San Angelo from 1952 until her retirement in 1968. She considered her students as her own children. She was active in several national and local organizations including the American Association of University Women, the Retired Teachers Association, Friends of the Library, Project Dignidad, and the Literary Council where she taught. Marie was an ardent student of the Bible and as a founding member of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church taught Sunday school into her 90s. Marie is survived by her three daughters, Virginia Edgar and Bill, Nita Smith and husband, Hobby, all of San Angelo, along with Jean McManus and husband, Jim, of Red Springs, N.C. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, who were the light of her life, 13 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Additional survivors are two sisters, Marian Asberry and Ruth Burnett, both of San Angelo. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Cecil Lee Grimes, on April 1, 1925. AUTHER E. `SLIM' BALKUM MIDLAND - Auther E. ``Slim'' Balkum was born Jan. 19, 1925, in Byrd, Texas, near Miles. He was reared and educated in San Angelo. After having served in the U.S. Navy at Subic Bay in the Philippines during World War II, ``Slim'' as he was nicknamed by his fellow crewmen, returned home to San Angelo where he met and married Marion Gressett of Ballinger, Texas. Mr. Balkum began a career in the oilfield in the early 1950s, working for Arrow Drilling Co. in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico and Wyoming. The family settled in Midland in 1963. During the next 26 years of his 38-year career in the drilling industry, he worked for BBM Drilling Co., Tom Brown Drilling Co., F.W.A. Drilling Co. and Tri Service Drilling Co. He retired from Tri Service as a superintendent of drilling operations in 1989. Mr. Balkum was a member of Oaklawn Park Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge 623, both of Midland. His favorite pastime was fishing and more fishing. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Wiley Lee Balkum and Myrtle C. Balkum; two sisters, Mrs. Sam (Rachel) Bitner and Mrs. John (Inez) Whittenberg, all of San Angelo; and by his older brother, Eddie Lee Balkum of Katy, Texas. He was a member of the Church of Christ and was a farmer and worked for the State Highway Department until his retirement. He married Era Katherine Carden Dec. 25, 1921, in Colorado City. Mr. Reese is survived by his wife, Era of San Angelo; one daughter and son-in-law, Doris and A.J. Martin of San Angelo; one daughter-in-law, Patsy Reese of Abilene; five grandsons; five great-grandsons; three great- granddaughters; and a brother, Kinnie Reese of Ennis. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Southgate Church of Christ and graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene with Paul Shero officiating. VIOLA REAVIS STEWART LEAKEY - Viola Reavis Stewart was born Feb. 26, 1909, in her parents' home at Dry Creek Ranch near Barksdale in the Nueces Canyon country of Texas. She married J. Ralph Stewart on Feb. 28, 1926, and they spent their early married life in Camp Wood, Texas, where he was the owner and editor of the local paper, The Messenger of Light. She assisted him in those duties while raising the four children born in Camp Wood, Evelyn, Ray, Lucille and Chris. They lived in Sabinal for a year before moving to San Angelo in 1939. Her husband, J. Ralph Stewart, was active in the oil business in that area for many years. After their son, Mike, was born they moved to Christoval where they lived until moving to Uvalde in 1977. After the death of her husband in 1984, she remained in the Uvalde area until 1994 when she moved to Leakey. She passed away Aug. 22, 1997, after a brief illness. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Camp Wood and the Christoval Baptist Church and affiliated with the Church in the Valley of Leakey. She was a staunch Republican and supporter of conservative causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Ralph Stewart; two daughters, Lucille Smith and Chris Wixon; and two sons, Mike Stewart and John Stewart Jr. She is survived by her son, J. Ray Stewart and wife, Doris, of Ruidoso, N.M.; daughter, Evelyn S. Graham of Leakey; brother-in-law, Carroll Stewart and wife, Corrinne, of Uvalde; sister-in-law, Eula Stewart of San Antonio; daughter-in-law, Sigrid Stewart of Midland; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. ALICE KATHERINE BOYD ALPINE - Alice Katherine Boyd, 87, born Nov. 7, 1909, in Silver Creek, Miss., the daughter of the Rev. J.L. and Clara R. Boyd, died quietly in Fort Stockton Nursing Center on Tuesday, July 15, 1997. Dr. Boyd served as professor of speech and drama at Sul Ross State University from 1955 until her retirement in 1975. Dr. Boyd began her college teaching career at Mississippi Women's College (later William Carey College) and continued it at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene before joining the faculty of Sul Ross State University in Alpine as chairman of the Department of Speech and Drama. Dr. Boyd received the Ph.D. degree from Columbia University in 1946 in the field of theater and the dramatic arts, writing a dissertation entitled, ``The interchange of plays between London and New York, 1910-1939: A study in relative audience response.'' In addition, Dr. Boyd received the L.H.D., honoris causa, from William Carey College. A private service at the ancient family burial site in Mississippi is planned.
