The family moved to Brewster County in 1919 where her father bought a ranch in Terlingua. Elvie graduated from Sterling City High School and attended West Texas Normal School in Canyon and taught for two years. In the spring of 1920, she rode the Orient Railroad train to Alpine where she fell in love with the beautiful mountains. She was among the first students to enroll at Sul Ross Normal School, which she attended in the summers and taught during the rest of the year. She taught four more years in Alpine and San Elizario and two years in Hawaii where she taught on the ``big island'' near Hilo. That was a very happy time of her life. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Sul Ross State Teachers College in 1934. She then decided to pursue another career and became a cashier and bookkeeper at Central Power and Light Co., now West Texas Utilities. She was married to Virgil Williams in 1936, who passed away six years later. Elvie then, in 1943, entered the military service during World War II since she had two brothers serving their country and she was part of a very patriotic family. She joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and was accepted into Officer Candidate School in Des Moines, Iowa. She was commissioned a second lieutenant and most of her military service was at Kelly Field in San Antonio where she was civilian personnel officer and attained the rank of first lieutenant. Following the war, Elvie was honorably discharged in January 1946, and again headed for her favorite place, Alpine, to resume her employment with the utilities company. She later had her own bookkeeping service and also became employed as an accountant and purchasing agent at Sul Ross State University in 1955. After her retirement at age 71, she became actively involved in volunteer work in the community. This included serving as the first woman president of the Alpine Chamber of Commerce in 1976 and a board member for several years; a board member, volunteer bookkeeper and secretary for the Sunshine House, a senior citizens center; member of the advisory board of the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute (CDRI); chairman of the board of directors of the Alpine Housing Authority; a life member of the American Legion; a charter, gold star and life member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she served in many officer positions for both; charter member of AARP Chapter 2100, Chamber of Commerce and its Ambassador Club; a member of West Texas Folklore Society, on the board of directors of Brewster County Historical Society; and a member of the Sul Ross Ex-Student Association. In 1975, Elvie served as chairman of the Heritage Program on the Bicentennial Committee. In 1979, she was the general coordinator and treasurer of the High Country Hospital Roundup which raised $80,000 for the Big Bend Memorial Hospital. Her many accomplishments and contributions to Brewster County and the entire Big Bend area are overwhelming. She was elected ``Citizen of the Year'' in 1976 and Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year in 1988. On Aug. 7, 1993, her 95th birthday, Elvie was honored for a lifetime of community achievements by the entire community when ``Elvie Williams Day'' was observed in Alpine, hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary, Big Bend Unit No. 79, at a reception held at the American Legion Hall.
